For example summoner/melee, I don't know if any of this has been changed post 1.4.4 but this is how it works/use to work for this example pre mech:

Snapthorn + fetid baghnakhs + the blade staff and titanium armour, your accessories could be something like the pygmy necklace, berserker gloves, star veil, brain of confusion, worm scarf and the last 2 accessories don't matter as much but you'd probably use wings and a dash if you needed to move away and regen.

Whips increase melee attack speed and provides tag which boosts the blade staff, the blade staff could have it's damage increased even more by using the sharpening station which affects minions while holding a melee weapon.
