you can get sentries which are stationary minions basically, if you beat the old ones army once then you can use the sentries outside of just the event

You get to use "Tier 1" sentries outside of the event that benefit you until Hardmode

Later on you can get really nice weapons from the even as it upgrades as you progress, but if you don't do the event before you progress you'll be doing the harder version with the weaker sentries. You can also get really strong armor for ealr hard mode and late hard mode. As well as get an extra inventory item so you can carry 5 inventories worth of stuff with you

also if you get enough medals you can get the defender's forge which is another personal storage
