I think the sand blocks count towards hallowed desert, which is technically hallow but requires a different amount of blocks. It's the only thing that comes to my mind, a lot of sand is required to create a desert.

shimmer can't be grabbed with buckets, but you CAN move it with inlet/outlet pumps.
so you can get a handy dandy pool of shimmer near your home base.
