Yeah its good if you have a good afk farm, you get a chest full of vetebraes really easily

even without it though just killing crimson mobs normally yields you like 1 brain of cthulu per 5 minutes or so

What is the best melee armor pre-mech

I've been fond of the Adamantite Armour since 1.4.1. It has a very slight defence advantage over the Titanium Armour, and great bonuses on all the pieces, with the set bonus buffing it even further. Titanium Armour is probably better for regular exploration since the set bonus will knock most enemies away from you, but Adamantite is great for bosses.
