You should build a bridge out of asphalt on the ocean surface

Without a Demon Heart, you don't have 6 slots in Expert. You have 6 slots in Master without a Demon Heart, but you also have 7 slots in Master if you use a Demon Heart. So no, outside of Classic worlds Demon Hearts are definitely not "pretty useless".
