Ok...there has to be a better way. New char, new world...trying to future proof against spread is what's turning me off the game recently. Soo much work(New char: No bombs or other cool toys for quick excavation) for very little reward besides stopping a game mechanic from screwing my world, that will just be undone after beating a boss and having a new set of spreadable biome placed randomly that you have even less time to halt/fix.

Future proofing is not a decent option simply because of how much time and effort it wastes. What I always do is just dig diagonal tunnels along the V that generates. It minimizes the potential spread and doesn't require digging tons of vertical and horizontal tunnels across the world. Smashing altars in a separate world also avoids the random chance for a tile in the world to be converted. Also being familiar with spreading mechanics will help avoid making tunnels or gaps that are excessive.

for movement, I usually rock shield of cthulhu, amphibian boots, and horseshoe balloon until pre-mech, switch out horseshoe balloon for wings, switch out shield for the 5 minutes I'm using crystal assassin armor, go back to using shield, trade amphibian boots for soaring insignia and SoC for master ninja gear by post-plantera
