Yeah. Also, the summon items for the mechs and the pirate invasion can be obtained right after starting hard mode, so it gives way more control over the situation (that is, only spawning them when you want to or when you're prepared).

There are also diminishing returns for every additional set of 3 altars, so it gets to a point where it's a wasted effort to smash more. You'll also have a random chance for a stone tile in the cavern layer to be converted to crimson/corruption or hallow each time you smash an altar, so that's something to be wary of.
