I’d say be ready to die a lot lol
Just be patient - the beginning is pretty slow
Start your character’s difficulty as “soft core”, no shame in it - trust me.
Chop trees for wood for houses and platforms
Store your $ in a chest or piggy bank so you don’t lose it
NPCs move into houses (1 per house) the further you progress or the more you accomplish their requirements - many of them don’t have requirements
The “guide” NPC (the first NPC you have, with brown hair) is more or less your crafting helper - he’ll tell you what you need to make certain things that you have materials for
Browse the wiki occasionally, it’s very helpful
Fear and avoid the night and the evil biomes (red or purple depending on your world) at first
And, as a personal preference, woodland/snow biomes are my initial starter areas I set off in - desert (and jungle) are too hard early on IMO
