Souls of light dropped from underground hallow mobs, souls of night dropped from underground corrupt/crimson mobs. A bunch of weapons for early hardmode can be made with these, take them to the guide. Also you can make wings from souls of flight dropped by wytherins in the sky.

Maybe the easiest way is to make a graveyard biome by placing a bunch of graves together untill theres fog. Then make a shovel at an anvil which allows you to did 3x3 soft blocks like mud and make strips in a mushroom biome. Otherwise if you can get a pickaxe that mines mud faster that's good too

Also you can use water candles from the dungeon and battle potions as well as bloody tears to increase spawns

The zoologist has an accessory that when activated in your inventory prevents accidentally killing critters so that might be useful for you also
