"Really strong". how strong? Compared to Terra Blade/Influx Waver?
I also don't play ranger all that often. lack the survivability/versatility of either the magic class or the melee class. just seem to be a rather gimmicky supportive class with stuff like sniper scope, and stealth from shroomite armor and vortex armor (that does not even work in singleplayer, except the damage boost)
"force multiplier", but not for frontline brawling. Same go with magic, although they are a little bit of "force auxiliary", considering the bonuses from the two endgame set

Magic is cool and all but you get a penalty when you drink a mana potion, so you should either wait for your mana to refill the normal way or lose some damage output

as said, ranger is good force multiplier, because you can always use more dpm (or dps, whichever fits you). Not designed for close combat, but overall flexible armament.
Pre-hard, well, you have the night's edge, dark lance, or enchanted sword, for that matter. muramasa, blade of grass and so on. ranged get the ... minishark(?), magic the space gun, fire flower, demon scythe)
I mean in fairness pre-hard the ranger isnt really a thing. Sure you have minishark (which is basically useless against anything with decent defense). and while star cannon exist the ammunition is just impractical. although, fending off zombies with minishark will make do if that's what it takes to get stars for boss fights
against bosses I guess its really up to your class since they basically have all form of attacks (most boss have at least some form of ranged/projectile attack, and most do lots of contact damage and move quickly and/or is large)
Which is why, well, they are boss fights and, well, multiplayer exists
