Firstly, run terraria and choose your character and world and start off spelunking in a cave, make sure to bring wood and a few torches/gel for the journey. Find hermes boots and any other accessory that can prove to be useful, then return to the surface and go on a killing spree of demon eyes and make sure to get atleast 6 lens. After that, venture into the corruption/crimson and smash an orb / heart to get a musket / undertaker. Make sure to make a suspicious looking eye before you leave, then continue by getting several ore and make bars. Make something useful out of metal like bows and armor. Prepare an arena before dusk and then summon the boss.

After killing the eye, equip the newly obtained shield of cthulhu and make gear from the Demonite dropped. Proceed to the corruption and stay alerted for the devourers / eater of souls there. Prepare an arena either on the surface or the underground corruption, Make sure your arena is wide. Defense is valuable in this boss fight.
