Once you enter Hardmode, just fish for Crates, you probably have stocked up on Crate Potions by then, then fish until you have enough Mythril/Orichalcum to both make an Anvil and corresponding pickaxe. You're now ready for Hardmode mining until you get the Drax/Pickaxe Axe.
