it;s called the corruption, in another version of the world has a red counterpart called crimson. you can't mine stuff from there until you defeat the boss there (in the purple world, the eater of worlds, a worm) however you can use bombs to break blocks
you should get better gear first before fighting them (platinum/gold depending on what spawns I think it's platinum for corruption?)
if you're really curious, you can always search on the wiki about what there is you want to learn about the place

btw I recommend fighting the eye of cthulu first since that's easier in comparison in my opinion
the eye drops items that can help you create better armor and weapons once you make them into bars but you need scales from the worm boss in the corruption to actually craft them
just bomb the place and break 3 orbs to summon the worm boss
