They really only acknowledge their neighbors if there’s either too many neighbors or a neighbor that they have a strong opinion of, good or bad.

No it's definitely close enough, the range is 150 blocks I believe

The snow biome npcs are significantly closer and they won't acknowledge it either

Maybe it's something glitched with only master mode worlds, since I haven't had any problems before in this update

Thorns will help you deal with Spazmatizm and, to a lesser extent, Retinazor, as they will get close and personal with you during the first phase. The Thorns Potion is very good against Spazmatizm, as it will charge towards you at high speeds to get a nibble of delicious top flesh.

Of course, if you’re good at dodging, you won’t benefit from thorns as much.
