Yes, the 4 classes are:
Melee (swords, flails, and yo-yos)
Ranger (bows, guns, and thrown)
Mage (tomes and staves)
Summoner (minions and whips)

For melee I would recommend going for a gold/platinum sword and armor, then battle your first couple bosses

If you find a gravitation potion, look for the starfury in floating islands

After beating the eye of Cthulhu, you can craft the lights bane/blood butcherer, depending on your world evil (corruption or crimson)

You’ll want to keep it for later

At some point you should farm blood moons for a shark tooth necklace, and search the jungle for feral claws

While in the jungle, find stingers and jungle spores to make the blade of grass

Then fight the eater of worlds or brain of Cthulhu (again depending on your evil biome) to make a pickaxe and armor (corruption increases melee attack speed and crimson increases regen)

With the armor, you should be able to take on skeletron and open the dungeon, where you should search the locked chests for the muramasa

Then go to the underworld to grab enough hellstone to make a pickaxe, armor, and the fiery greatsword

With the evil ore sword, blade of grass, fiery greatsword, and muramasa, go find a demon altar or crimson altar to make the nights edge
