tbf gold and leather armour are equally stupid based on that standard... Iron is so easy to get that there's no point getting leather armour and gold is a joke... yet they do add something to the game for people who want to use them.

I think to make Copper tools worthwhile they'd need to solve the durability problem first... if durability wasn't a thing then they could give each material other trade offs that aren't overshadowed by just... not breaking.

gold and leather each have at least something unique to them to not make them completely useless though

leather armor is dyeable and gold armor makes piglins not attack you

i'm not sure if they're making copper armor do something unique too and i'm not sure what it'd even be if they did

If leather armour being dyable is sufficient then really any armour with a different look is justified...

Netherite is the equivalent of the Zenith being trophy armour

Leather armour being dyable is just aesthetic. Copper armour also has a unique aesthetic. If unique aesthetic justifies a armour set not being 'stupid' then copper armour is justified. If unique aesthetic does not justify the armour then leather armour is also not justified.

Yeah it would be nice... I think they should remove durability entirely and have each armour type give more unique bonuses... leather could give bonuses to the speed of horses you ride (or have an exclusive enchantment that does) or improve bow/crossbow draw speed or something. Iron I would have give some melee boost... increased damage for Swords and Axes maybe. Gold already has Piglins but it could also have some exclusive enchantments related to villager trading and Diamond/Netherite's unique thing is just having the highest armour rating and armour trims.

Then copper I would probably have something that might help survival redstoners and people who use golems and copper chests... make it a logistics/mechanics set.
