how to get going with hardmode ores in 7 easy steps
step 1: to spawn the new hardmode ore you want to smash lots (6 or 9 is good, more is better ofc) of the evil altars (leave 1 for crafting) with the Pwnhammer you got from WoF
step 2: use your molten pickaxe (crafted from hellstone) to mine cobalt/palladium
step 3: use cobalt/palladium to make a new pickaxe (and optionally power bombs to help with hardmode ore mining)

I do have a summoner setup for pre-mech duke if you want to see it
But Jason's guide should show you the best setup for pre-mech duke, maybe with some altered items

keep the wire lens in your inventory when exploring and you can ambiently see the wiring for those explosive traps. then use the un-wiring wrench to strip the wiring before opening the chest and it is safe

that way you don't even need a potion buff. but you cant get the wire lens until you kill skeletron

many possible reasons
not enough room for enemies to spawn, just make it longer to the sides while still making sure enemies can't spawn else where
decreased spawn rates or not enough increases to the spawnrate, make the artifical biome at atleast cavern layer (make it like at minimum a 100 blocks below the cavern line), add an artifical jungle & artifical desert nearby while making sure enemies can't spawn on top of it, get rid of any spawn rate decreaser like fishing set, calming potion, peace candle and towns (you will need a shadowcandle so the random skeleton merchant spawn & others doesn't ruin it) and get the ones that increase it like battle potion and water candle

No, you get the crimson key from a chance of a drop from enemies in the crimson, then you use that to unlock the crimson chest in the dungeon. I believe on the 3ds version of terraria you still need to craft the key using a key mold dropped by enemies in the crismon

"Looks like 1.4.5 changed this too, since instead of checking the tile directly underneath player, the game now checks if the block at center of player's hitbox is marble/granite, which is really strange

There are 3 other checks done for marble/granite enemies to spawn, and one of them can be fulfilled to make them spawn instead:

1- the game checks if the spawn tile itself is marble/granite

2- the game checks some random blocks around the spawn tile to see if it finds marble/granite, this has a chance to succeed if there is any marble/granite within 30 blocks of the spawn tile, and is guaranteed to succeed if there is a 3x3 cube of marble/granite within 20 blocks of the spawn tile

3- the game checks some random blocks around the player to see if it finds marble/granite, this has a chance to succeed if there is any marble/granite within 60 blocks of the player, and is guaranteed to succeed if there is a 6x6 cube of marble/granite within 30 blocks of the player (measured from player's center)

Right now a single marble/granite block underneath the player has a chance to be caught by the 3rd check, but it doesn't guarantee their full spawn rate anymore"
