There's a somewhat uncommon furniture item in the chests in abandoned houses underground called an extractinator.
Placing silt, slush, & desert fossils on it will turn them into money, ores, & gems.

that said you'll find a lot of amber, which I believe you can shimmer down to ruby

If you've reached the jungle-side ocean, it might be worth trying to find the shimmer instead.
A diamond will degrade to a ruby when shimmered.
