Calamity. Just beat Anahita and Leviathan, but diving down the Abyss for lumenyl is terrible without proper accessories. I've been trying to find Moray Eels for an hour just to get a Flipper in order to start crafting up toward Abyssal Diving Gear, but in a little more than an hour, not a single Moray Eel spawned. Even in a different world. Does it have any specifics for spawning that aren't in the wiki?

Infernum was not made to be 'what Malice should have been' it was meant to be 'what if Calamity bosses weren't made by Fabsol', which it does do a good job at and was innovative for the time.
However, much like Calamity itself, for the most part it has not aged the best.

It really, truly has not.
In February, Calamity had its first completed boss fight implemented. It was Brain of Cthulhu.
The next Calamity update will fix an outdated name that has been in the mod for three years.
They have a lot of stuff they have to work through due to the prior leadership and it is going to take them a long time to deal with it.

recipe browser is basically mandatory

if you want to avoid spending half your play time tabbed out of terraria and browsing the wiki, i mean

i'd recommend looking at the calamity wiki's mod progression guide jsut to get an idea of what bosses you need to fight at what stage

because i made the mistake a few times of accidentally progression skipping

like i beat yharon before DoG solely because i got his summoning item first when i could've saved myself a hell of a lot of time and Agony by just fighting the devourer first

as for classes,

melee is as powerful in calamity as it is in vanilla

actually moreso

melee just straight up is the best class full stop, unlike in vanilla where it's only debatably the best class

that's not to say it's totally overpowered, but it is way easier to use with basically no downsides 99% of the time

most calamity melee weapons sadly just fall into the typical vanilla melee pitfall of being mana-less mage weapons

calamity also patches out a lot of the typical vanilla progression skips (because fabsol is a wiener) so just keep that in mind as well if you plan on doing those

Also the best class in Calamity bar none is Summoner.

Melee is actually the middle of the road class.
