In this case Yamata's chest has already violently ruptured and drained it of nearly all its bodily fluids, and its muscles have sorely atrophied and torn due to the body being moved in ways it never could, even disregarding rigor mortis.

How do you design your backgrounds for the artwork?

I usually start with a simple color, often light or pastel. In this case I used grey as a base. Then I used a lot of gradients to set the mood

How do I do it? Easy. 1: Have your base design. 2: Color that design the glow color you want. 3: Make a copy and color the copy white. Make sure it's layered directly on top (Don't actually move it and this is optional and mostly a stylish preference, this is how I make that 'neon glow', white is pretty useful here) 4: The layer below the white layer will be blurred using a filter known as 'Gaussian Blur', this makes that nice glow. And as an optional thing, you can use 'Motion Blur' to create that bending glow effect, like it's refracting off a lense or whatever

Good guess, but the clock is mostly symbolism of the lore

To summarize it, the character is named Soular. But this current version (purple dragon) is actually a younger version of Soular, known as Soul. It's basically a reincarnation, a 'Reset' if you will. Soular used to be a vile and corrupt being of power, but after the reset, Soul is oblivious to what all their past self has done. However, their past conscious still battles for control over Soul, trying to revert them back to their genocidal ways

I took that idea and ran with it, symbolism everywhere in the piece

The clock represents 'the reversal of time'. The clock itself actually is at 5:00 which holds a candle to the motif of the number 5 revolving around Soul. The kanji on the purple strip reads "Reset!!" and the shadowy beast in the top left is a shadow interpretation of Soular, on the maw-horn, it reads "Past", symbolising how the past still meets with Soul (Reset) to this day, still battling for control

And yeah I made this for a friend, I was late by 1 day since this took much longer than I had expected, but I still got it finished the day right after and they were very happy about it so mission accomplished

Soul themselves is like a spiritual warrior. A zombie-like or ghostly samurai. In the references I looked for, I never saw one with their sword out, so I improvised off the idea of them being a spiritual warrior, engraving details on the sword with kanji that reads "afterlife" or "future" in a sense, more symbolizing how Soul is still willing to fight off the past with who they believe they were always meant to be. Soul also has a ghostly white-flame breath, had fun designing that too :>

I've been trying to do some stuff in ms paint and the issue I've been having is that it's really hard to do some details, cuz the smallest brush size for the pencil* tool (the one I use for rendering) is too thick

So, for starters (don't kill me please) but I use the airbrush for almost everything shading and lighting. Here's the shading work and I usually stop here before doing my lighting technique

What I do is that in a new layer: I cover the entire character in the color black, then I set it to 'Color Dodge'. That will seemingly do nothing, but stay with me here

I then use the airbrush and set the opacity to something very low like <40%, often 27%

blend mode was the next step in me mastering my editing software

I remembered using the airbrush & blend mode one time

It was neat to figure out how shading worked

I make 4 copies of the black color-dodge. I then go over each one differently. The first one is for the ambient and regular lighting, adding more vibrancy to it and better establishing the color. Then for the next copy, I do the highlights, making things look shiny af U3U. I also do reflections and such. Then for the next copy, I add the rim-light, add that nice reflecting glow from metals, and overall polish to make everything look nice

I mostly use this technique for key-lighting and ambiance. I do secondary lighting and some other things by hand

These are both the same ball, but I used my technique on the right. Coloring it black and then setting it to 'Color Dodge' instead of using __just 'Color Dodge'

See how vibrant it looks on the right? For both I only have 3 layers, yet the resulars are fairly different
