Dig to +2-+5 before you hit Underground, dig east west roughly 1000 blocks in either direction. Collect the 5 chests you will likely find, then you have recalls, and are safer.

What I did here involves no risk for the E/W tunnel and you end up collecting chests etc quite easily. Any other play likely comes with some kind of risk.

Those blocks are also extremely valuable for creating qurantine tunnels on the surface and elsewhere

This is from my MM HC run but the principle is the same. This will protect you in the jungle early, and then obviously in HM even moreso when Turtles can one shot you

I usually build over the top of all the more dangerous biomes, entirely. Also serves to prepare the world for Pillars much later on. Just bring your setup to one of the many corridors you already have, and fight at the edge of the pillar's spawning
