So in the intro video for victory.band right now, one of the songs on the chart is a song by The Juicy Fruits called Goodbye Eddie, Goodbye. The Juicy Fruits are not a real band, they're a fake band from the movie Phantom of the Paradise.
@trim flicker just made me watch it and holy shit. First of all, jesus christ is it just a fever dream of a 70's rock opera. But secondly, and more importantly to this thread, there are a lot of parallels to Victory so far and I think the reference is very intentional.
Anything beyond this contains spoilers for Phantom of the Paradise & the German legend of Faust. If you want to see the movie and read a version of Faust before reading more, do it now.
First, kinda a surface level initial observation thing. But the song Special to Me sung by the character Phoenix is just the other side of Car Crash Baby. It has the same plot. Go listen to it.
Now larger plot observations. The whole story is about Winslow trying to make genuine music and then getting eaten up by the music industry and ends up selling his soul to a record label to get his music out there. Sounds a lot like the Super Platinum/La Lune section of Victory Live. I think there's a lot of themes around the music industry controlling art and corrupting it for profit. I think visually, the use of German Expressionism is very similar to the digital crush visual effects we've seen a lot of so far.
Another huge thing. The character of Winslow writes a whole cantata based on the classical German legend of Faust and the whole plot of the movie revolves around the performance of this Cantata. A few big things about this. First, Jung's Red Book (discussion about its parallels to Victory here #1425292164254138419) is Jung's personal Faust. It is just straight up a personal reinterpretation of Faust. Second relates to the story of Faust. Faust is about Faust and a deal he made with the Devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures (Super Platinum). He is ultimately saved from damnation by pure-hearted women (2nd half of Car Crash Baby).
Other observations include color which is very important to this movie which it also is in Victory. They use reds, whites, blacks, and blues basically just like Victory Live.
Genuinely go watch the movie. It's a good time and I love Beef.
