#Advice on installing a light KDE base

HDR is not avalible on cinnamon yet which is why I want to try the jump, I am not sure how I would uninstall gnome if I do not like it
I want to ensure that both installation and uninstalling will not be difficult
Being able to easily update is also a must because debian had a memory leak when I test
yk you can just
install it in a vm
Also if you want to bother with latest gnome check out the blfs book
Sounds complicated
trust me
Blfs is "Beyond Linux From Scratch" right?
it is
yup
just install it from the gentoo repos
may not be the latest but it’s good enough
It doesn't include HDR
HDR is why I wanted to jump, cinnamon hasn't introduced it yet
KDE
Cosmic (it's not released)
Hyprland
I had issues on plasma and it's heavy
My monitor is HDR and it looks much nicer when supported
well my monitor is hdr and I could care less
I have launched a few things from an arch-chroot is it safe to launch gnome from that with gentoo as the host?
your only options are to wait for gnome 48 on gentoo or just wait till cinnamon implements it
Pretty much so far
uhhh
what are you trying to do
And no it won’t work in chroot
Gnome 48 is installed on Debian
I was unsure if I could launch it like I can with prismlauncher
You know, ima try it
Yeah it softlocks
I was trying to see if gentoo would suffer from the memory leaks like debian
Gentoo runs better than Debian on cinnamon
Gnome pulls in more dependencies on Debian due to it being a binary distro, however Gnome by itself should run better than Cinnamon
it does feel slightly more responsive sometimes too
Advice on installing Gnome 48
switch to arch
Pacman sucks
I like portage on Gentoo and apt on Debian
Hmmm.. I wonder if it is possible to install just kwin and make my own minimal setup with HDR?
I need to check KDE's version on gentoo
I do not want the whole KDE desktop as it takes more resources than cinnamon
maybe
it is not so much the size of the desktop, but rather the amount of resources it uses
plasma doesnt use that much resources lol
Ok looking this up, KDE has a LOT of use flags
It is heavy on Debian which might not be the same as on Gentoo
kwallet not being needed is really good
Ok this is interesting
KDE is ahead on Gentoo
KDE 5 doesn't exist on Gentoo
Gentoo and Arch use basically the same version of KDE
Wayland is what I intend to use
I have an RX 7800 XT now
I can't remember how to add the overlay. I am going to set up the eselect profile for KDE and then mess with that

👏 SUPPORT THE...
Prerequisites are still updating but I forgot about the split
Just to reinstate I want to try wayland KDE more than x11
@vagrant moth Chimera Linux is on Gnome 48
I noticed that when in an arch-chroot, gentoo will stop compiling when debian sleeps
my pc slept so I am still compiling
Yeah tend to disable the lid switch if it’s a laptop and disable automatic suspend
Logind for the lid switch disabling
Just close the lid and the hardware will shut off the screen
Laptop in server mode basically
Gnome settings for the suspend settings
I have a desktop
It was easy to fix on Debian Gnome
I doubled the timer from 5 to 10 minutes on screen turn off
15 to 30 for suspend
KDE seems to use a minimum of 1.56GB
Cinnamon used around 0.79GB
my sway session uses 312MiB
thats with swaybar, my status command, foot(the terminal) open
what terminal theme is that
no, terminal color scheme
ohhhhh

I didn't know you could just use a github link like that. I could have done this the whole time with gnome huh? Well it's nice to compare two desktops
