Eh. just use a KDE live .ISO image and follow a tutorial on youtube. I really recommend linuxtechgeek 2024 guide. It explains alot and walks you through it then the handbook, and its also very beginner friendly

Saying this computer is not your own is like the first thing to do, no wonder your dad thought you were irresponsible.

The only thing I can recomend is having two OS

See if you can do both gentoo and windows to ensure at least windows will be there if you mess up gentoo

Well I don't recommend that as it isn't an OS everyone is familiar with and KDE can be buggy on Nvidia since they have both AMD and Nvidia.

If you don't care about HDR go cinnamon if you can install gentoo along side windows

If HDR is more important than desktop icons and a traditional feel, gnome offers best
