What did the kde maintainers do is there some latest and greatest new thing

Not that I'm aware of.
I mostly meant that KDE works out of the box.
Every QT plugin is there, and I don't have to jump through hoops to set up PolKit and KWallet Secret Service and such.

I have had mixed experiences when it comes to the packaging of KDE's software on other distributions, like Void Linux.
