#Ultra Compact Kiosk System
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I need the essential features of Porteus Kiosk version 5: a robust and unbreakable kiosk system. It should boot using read-only files, with everything running from RAM after booting. The USB drive should be unmounted once the system is fully operational.
I require the ability to SSH or FTP into the kiosk to transfer files to the web root directory, allowing the Chrome browser to display content offline from the built-in webserver. Additionally, I need to configure basic settings like the IP address, screen rotation, and fixed screen resolution etc.
But yes, you’re likely correct. A LiveCD on a USB drive with some added features sounds like the ideal solution. 😊
PoS systems are rather popular at the moment
something going on in Unis I don't know about?
I believe many people depended on Porteus Kiosk, and now, everything has abruptly changed without any warning. This is a significant issue.
maybe that's it and being in the gentoo space I suppose I would be space to hear a lot of news on it
seems like a fun project though
i recently made a display system using cage
sorta kiosk like
i don't think there is a super simple way for making a gentoo system load into ram, but you could theoretically just pack a full system into an initramfs lol
do you really need chrome? maybe firefox-like something will be ok for your needs?
Bro wants ultra compact system to be bloated
We develop all our software for Chrome. In Porteus, you can easily switch between Firefox and Chrome during setup.
bro wants system with ability to startx and a web browser, or wayland-something + a webbrowser
I'm not sure how to "loading into ram" thing
Haha, yeah. If it were easy, more people would probably do it. It's strange that there isn't a real alternative to Porteus.
let's keep the memes out of support please
also how it should work with loading to ram? like you place usb stick or w/e, wait, now it works until there's power to the machine? sounds kinda unreliable tbh
if it's like liveusb, I guess, there's some articles at wiki.gentoo.org
We often used PXE boot as well. It’s nice to have all your kiosks run without any boot media. However, we mostly boot using high-quality USB drives.
you are over thinking this
Check out the Porteus website. The system is still available, but now it has a very expensive subscription model and can no longer run offline. And no pxe option anymore.
I'm not overally happy with doing commercial support for free however you need to get your actual needs planned out rather than the guesses you are making here then you can use the livegui from catalyst project to make this work. It's quite easy really however as said earlier I don't really want to get in more than this
I hope so. Would very much like to just use Ubuntu core and install the needed utilities - job done.
I've given you every hint you need though to make this a success 🙂
Sorry, this is a paid job. We are looking for a developer(a) who can help us out.
