Details:
Laptop: MacBook Air 2015
Network Controller: Broadcom BCM4360
Alternative Network Device: tp-link TL-WN823N Wi-Fi USB Adapter
Kernel Driver in Use: bcma-pci-bridge
Kernel Driver: bcma, wl

I checked the gentoo wiki for “Wi-Fi” and installed one of the Broadcom firmwares(there are 3 so idk if I’m correct or wrong) but I have potato brain so installed one before knowing if my network controller is even supported by any existing kernel and guess what IT IS NOT. Therefore, I did what anyone lazy like me would do is buy an alternative wireless usb adapter and because again like I stated earlier I have potato brain idk how to make that USB wireless adapter even work and I don’t even know if I even had to get one because my network controller might work but I just don’t know how to make it work. Point is I need help with this. Thanks in Advance 🙂

Anyone know how to make Wi-Fi work on my god damned Gentoo Machine

simple thunder
#

Most people just replace it

#

have you got the driver installed though and installed linuxfirmware?

stuck field
#

Some macbooks you cant replace the wifi card, the solution is usb dongle

@stiff pulsar i installed gentoo on an old i5... even after installing driver nm did not worked for me.. only dhcpcd and iwd after enabling networking tkip on the USE_FLAGS..

iwd was able to detect my network and dhcpcd did connected it

stiff pulsar
#

I even checked if it was installed in 2 ways: emerge —search … and just emerge —ask .. just to see that both show they are installed

stiff pulsar
#

But idk if it would even work “out the box”

#

@manic mirage weren't you dealing with this issue recently?

stiff pulsar
vapid atlas
#

yes

#

and emerged iwd and dhcpcd

#

then enabled both of them

stiff pulsar
#

Did u add it in the local use flags for nm?

#

Or in the global use flags?

#

(Correct me about anything regarding how use flags are used, I’m still new to this stuff)

vapid atlas
vapid atlas
#

because nm never worked for me

#

after iwd too

stiff pulsar
#

I’ll try it

#

Thanks

welcome

#

And if the kernel is too new than you have to fallback to lts

#

Don't think you have to rn cause my machine with that card works fine atm

stiff pulsar
manic mirage
#

I believe the exact same machine

#

MacBook air 2015?

stiff pulsar
#

yeah thats the same

#

and u have it working damn

#

what is the different thing u did

#

i realised the only problem i have with my laptop is that the wifi card isnt detected

#

is it because of the kernel? or maybe the firmware? idk

manic mirage
#

I used stable kernel with the broadcom-sta driver, afaik that's the only way to get it working on gentoo

#

I'm not home ATM but I can send some stuff if itd help when I get back

stiff pulsar
#

sure thanks i most likely think the kernel version would be the helpful since I also installed the broadcom-sta driver

manic mirage
#

I know in the past I've had to use lts kernel

#

I've got nearly everything working accept audio, I'll send some diagnostics when I get home tho, should be less than 2-3 hours

manic mirage
#

@stiff pulsar im back home now anything specific you want?

#
COMMON_FLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe"
CFLAGS="${COMMON_FLAGS}"

Ok let me check

Mine doesn’t have Broadcom-sta.conf

manic mirage
#

try adding it and rebooting

stiff pulsar
#

By adding u mean emerging

manic mirage
#

that conf you write i think

#

make sure you have broadcom-sta tho

stiff pulsar
#

Ok

stiff pulsar
manic mirage
#

oh right
and use NetworkManager

stiff pulsar
manic mirage
#

get that config written, install network manager, reboot

stiff pulsar
#

OH GOD

#

wifi is working finally

stiff pulsar
#

THANK YOUUUUUUUUU

stiff pulsar
#

thank you so much

#

never thought i had to blacklist these things and it would work
