#Steam can't display properly

Whenever I try to open up steam, steam will just hang and not display anything at all. I did find a way to partially fix this through 'steam --reset' but that didn't work fully. It was able to be "workable". As in: able to access settings, friends etc but no main window stuff like library or store.

One more thing I think this error has something to do with this as I checked in the terminal via 'steam -c' and saw this running on repeat frequently:
"Could not connect to X session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and h"

i run xorg

#

I ran that command and it displayed: ":0.0"

@versed notch i shouldve prolly @d you as a response

Was it set in the window where you started steam as well? Try DISPLAY=":0.0" steam and see what happens. Do you get any other log messages?

#

i'll have to try it when i get home and remove the flatpak install for steam and try to emerge it again @versed notch

steam is shite. did it display anything, like a black window?

#

if it's a black window, try going into the menu and click "small mode" or tiny mode or w/e

#

also if you're trying it thru flatpak, try it thru the overlay

orchid pine
#

not even a black window

#

it can't even get past the login

orchid pine
#

btw i have the deleted the .Xauthority a bunch of times and still nothing

#

i even removed and reinstalled it and emerged steam-meta. still nothing

#

thats why i ran the flatpak version @frank mirage

#

im assuming this has something to do with the new UI update and it possibly effecting xdg-desktop

#

but even when i installed the gtk version. nothin

#

i also have seen a couple people on GitHub having the same issue so it seems universal so far

#

well remotely as they at least got steam to display but with a black box

frank mirage
#

yeah. steam is dogdung

#

steam used to work without the webserver, now it's mandated.

#

settings and friends lists displayed?

#

steam://open/minigameslist
steam://open/games

#

try opening either in your browser

orchid pine
#

hmm i'll try that

#

lemme try to run steam --reset

#

oh wait no

#

nope

#

i'll have to remove the flatpak since it seems the steam commands dont wanna work

#

"GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed"

#

here's another error that continues to pop up frequently

"Authentication rejected" Are you trying to run it as a different user in X?

orchid pine
#

yea other than root

#

@rancid narwhal

#

aka my only user is my own account

#

So good news. I removed .Xauthority and .ICEauthority in both user and root. it PARITALLY works. by that i mean now its able to "login" unfortunately nothing is still displayed. but atleast i can see my friends list

#

its very funny but i am able to access "steam" including stuff like "Home" collections but its completely invisbile

#

nevermind its back to doing the exact samething but i might have to restart the PC in order to get the invisible steam effect

These are few things I can suggest: 1) You need to authorize the user that runs the game to use X. This can be done with xhost +SI localuser:username from a shell running as the host user. 2) Make sure the directory referred in $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR of the game user exists. 3) Don't run steam directly using sudo or a launcher but from a shell running as the game user so you can see messages and sudo doesn't mess it up.

I had a black screen issue from a game as well before but I forgot how it was even fixed. I think I allowed steam to run for a while and perhaps it executed a few updates.

orchid pine
#

oh no not any game its mainly just the steam ui itself

#

havent launched anything yet

#

@rancid narwhal

orchid pine
#

xhost: bad hostname "SI"
xhost: unknown address family "localuser"
xhost: bad hostname "localuser:niko"
I got these errors

#

nvm it works now

#

still no change

#

here's a thing i found out tho

#

it is a bug on steam most definitely because the ui is able to perfectly work in the old ui

#

it can be enabled via steam -vgui

rancid narwhal
#

I'm using steam-launcher 1.0.0.75 from steam-overlay and normal steam works fine for me. Frontpage shows. -vgui otoh works too except it doesn't load my friends list. I'm disconnected.

#

I wonder if steam has a soft dependency on webkit and you need to have it installed. Webkit takes really long to build though.

My steam uses SDL as one of its backends if not its main.

#

1.0.0.75 is old btw. New one is 76-r1.

You should also try running steam in a new temporary user. Problem might be caused by cache, corrupt files, or stale files that poison the downloaded client.

orchid pine
#

hmm might be possible

#

i'll try to install webkit and if that doesn't work i'll just create a new user

frank mirage
orchid pine
#

the old ui? the problem is that even when i set it up within the new ui, the mini menu does not appear and it's still invisible

frank mirage
#

._. steam is terrible :D

#

but is the old ui fully functional for you though?

orchid pine
#

nope

#

friends list can't function neither store or anything other than library etc etc

#

stuff thats hardcoded into the Ui

#

otherwise i opened an issue page on GitHub. There's already a couple people with similar issues

frank mirage
#

I always have that issue, I honestly just stopped gaming

#

Easier :) steam is garbage and never works

frank mirage
orchid pine
#

yea its not that bad

twin harness
#

I have troubles with steam in firejail, it can't use video drivers

orchid pine
#

naw i fixed the issue. it was apparently my VIDEO_CARDS section on make.conf that was causing the problem
