i mean 470 did work on openbox and did run minecraft
but with unimpressive fps compared to windows
but rn you're dealing with some mismatches
and kde was ofc borked
yeah
righty
uhh
i'm now back to the stuck black screen
no tty or anything
no it launched straight into it
from reboot? or what
ah.
you were chrooted from an iso and modprobed the driver into the kernel from the iso earlier
was i?
I think you should just temporarily disable your display manager
yes the kernel doesn't change when you chroot
at least I assume you were chrooted if booting into the regular machine gives you a black screen
back when i changed over the xorg config all i did is boot into an xubuntu livecd and move over my backup of the file back to main
right i booted an older kernel as to not get the display manager to start
what do i do to remove the display manager from starting again
rc-update remove display-manager?
is it --remove
oh its del
lel
there we go
lemme reboot back to normal kernel
right what do you propose i do now
@mossy plinth do you think i might be better off just reinstalling or?
reinstalling does technically teach less but it‘s up to you rly this has obviously taken a while
well what is there to troubleshoot still
idk what to do next tbh
i dont particularly want to reinstall
new questions
is it possible to set up my own local binhost on my server where it just compiles and keeps up to date every gentoo package, compiled for native
just thinking of how to save time on a possible full reinstall
@paper field
or if anyone has any other ideas on troubleshooting this...
Quickpkg <@&1101551477635428453>
REAL
does that create all of the packages
That will make a binary of everything on the system
i was thinking more from an ubuntu server machine
aka my server
pulling and compiling every package to use as a local binhost
Oh chroot on the ubuntu system would be how I did it
<@&1101551477635428453>

whats the worst that could happen if i were to accidentally clone a gentoo drive compiled for skylake to run on haswell
uhh
not much
just re-emerge everything
with updated -march if you specified skylake
welp i guess ill have to reinstall
might go for gnome this time, as envycontrol which seems promising here would appear to have a gnome app to readily switch between integrated, hybrid and dedicated
from the <@&1101555344624324671> people here, only one there may take the powers to emerge the <@&1101551477635428453> using -flto -funroll-loops -Ofast -mcpu=7450 -mabi=alvitec -maltivec -pipe

the deception
not <@&1101555429177299014> should emerge with -flto optimizations
as I said, only one
at least from the <@&1101555344624324671> people <@&1101555511566028861>
totally not trying to diagnose issues here or anything
my bad sorry :(
that one must be me!
holy
bonus ram usage flex picture
Oh dear
Also, what the hell
- hopefully Gentoo reinstall done @mossy plinth @paper field gonna try envycontrol and see what happens
oh come on I forgot to install sudo
I am envious of that bootloader splash
:headslam:
angry systemd-boot noises
lel
It's just grub with le theme
ffs I think I might actually have to chroot back into the iso
aghh
this entire thread is well and truly an nvidia moment
yup you bet it
- Laptop hybrid moment
do I have to do all of the mounting of sys and proc etc every time just to emerge sudo
and edit the sudoers file
I'm pretty sure Portage requires those to be mounted to work correctly
well, most things do
14mb wtf
you don't use this system often tho, because 14mb of ram means ALOT of base stuff removed
This is a normal PowerPC stage3. I took that screenshot on the first successful boot
I removed nothing
Xorg wasn’t running ofc, just the tty
But yeah, I don’t actually use that thing. I tried to get Minecraft running, but only got very broken software rendering because ATI
With Xorg and IceWM running, it’s 35 MiB. Mind you, it’s a very basic desktop without PulseAudio and stuff, so it does have things missing in that regard. But ALSA is enough for a nugget like that
Precisely. It depends on the architecture
yea
This is 32-Bit PowerPC
Very simple. Not much hardware to address in that thing either
Hell yeah
also, update - new install of Gentoo complete with gnome but still running into issues like before. Right now the Nvidia driver won't even initialise but I give up for tonight
A lot less to go wrong with that. This laptop is fucked
I want to get a PowerBook or something
The actual laptop itself or just Gentoo?
If the laptop what happened
The powerbook. The case is in poor condition and the ram slots are bad, and only work when it’s warm
And the fan bearing makes an ungodly noise
that sounds a bit like capacitor failure over the 3v or 5v rails
I'd check that with a multimeter
Or 1.1 rails
If it's seen a lot of use that's very plausible and a recap of the voltage rail could fix that
Since capacitors increase in their capacitance when warm especially when worn, however you'd expect to see that cause other issues too
Just oiling it could help but failing that I'm sure new ones aren't too expensive
Implying that I own a multimeter here
Oh, I thought you wouldve lol
I’m afraid to open it, honestly, because of how bad the case is
I have a shitty one in Germany
Is it really that bad? Didn't look it in the pictures I've seen
Yeah, it’s like bent up in the bottom left corner
You know
Taking it apart could be beneficial then
You could get a hammer and some electrical tape and bend it back
I might bust it out again some time to have another go with it
Oh dear
Might work tho
And maybe pliers
Yeah
The ball side of a ballpein hammer would be ideal if you have one and if it's on an angle
But yeah, as those are all metal pretty much
@paper field
Other than that stuff there, I've done nvidia-xconfig and installed envycontrol
And set it for hybrid graphics and stuff on gdm
This could be the issue if I’m lucky. However, the BGAs on these ram slots are also known to crack because they are mounted upside-down
But yeah as of rn the Nvidia driver isn't even initialising
Ouch... Apple skill issue
Ver 470 + I give up for tonight
Pretty sure I also installed Nvidia firmware
skull
ofc
only one person would be that silly 😛
I haven't known anyone to use nvidia-xconfig for 17 years....
2 weeks and a Gentoo reinstall later
Me
Now time to try envycontrol gnome menu thing for switching modes and also some games/graphical stuff
Good start
Also soz don't have discord installed yet
or not python is having some massive conflict stroke thing
just pages of stuff like this
@paper field
hmm fairly unimpressive (like 1/4 of what windows does), but lemme dock the laptop since right now it should be heavily limited
much better just a battery thing
also idk how to make stuff full screen, gnome confuses me
and if you cant tell i dont use it often
@mossy plinth any ideas on whats causing this issue
python target was upgraded
so you have to recompile a lot of packages
happened weeks ago
oh ok neat
i'll do that now
but yeah the quadro is now working
i just need to get the envycontrol gnome panel working
also how tf do i make windows fullscreen on gnome theres only an X
(i dont generally use gnome)
yay 260 packages
i think windows-like control works?
windows key + up to maximize
hello
ello bossman
far too long later
It's the envycontrol GPU add-on for gnome
