Hi I am hoping to find Ella Pitinsky in the 1930 and 1940 census as well as her death record. I have already searched every variation I can think of including searching Ella and the 1906 DOB. I have searched the NYC historical vital records site for marriage and death records.

She appears in the 1920 census living with her sister and sister's husband/child. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MJY5-32B?lang=en&cid=fs_copy
This address is the same address she continued to use on her naturalization records through 1940, however she does not appear in the 1930/1940 census there (her sister continued to live there). Year of birth given as 1900

She is well represented through petitions for naturalization through 1940.

She first appears in her father Henry's petition, with birth year listed in 1898

Her petition stating she is from "Litin, Poland" in 1937, note she gives her address as the 1920 address and gives 1906 birth date

another petition from 1937, she gives 1900 birthdate

arrival:

I could only find this one on ancestry, it takes us to 1940, again with the same address.

I have already identified both of the witnesses, they are her cousins, and she is not living with them.

I'd appreciate any help I can get!

Have you gone through city directories yet?

Also when you say you were searching in NYC Historical Vital Records were you actually searching on that site or on FamilySearch?

But i searched everywhere... main familysearch, full text, ancestry

Search here, then use the information you find to look in 1860

#

Marriage licenses and certs aren't the same thing, so different indexes

A bit of both

#

I've been looking off and on for years

nova oak

Sorry, I'm not actually healthy enough to look for you, I'm just tossing you suggestions, making sure the basics are covered (which it sounds like they are, but always good to check).

No hits on any newspapers that i've found. Nothing in the family search collection. There's a Jennie but looking through her sources it can't be the same person

Mitch and Matt's website is showing a ton of Newspapers from lots of places I rarely (if ever) look, and a few that are new to me.

She may not have married at all, as she's still single up til 1940

Have you manually looked in nearby pages from her brother and sister in the census? It's just a thought, in case she stayed closeby. I don't actually know what that area was like in the 30s and 40s - my knowledge of that neighborhood is a bit earlier and a bit later.

I assume she was probably living with her sister off and on, just not at the census times

#

yes went through all of the pages

Sorry I'm not giving you particularly good ideas!

No i know, i even threw AI on this to give me ideas (I know, I know)

Also TIL that Tompkins Square Park has "Temperance Fountain" which is kind of hilarious given the later history of the park.

I'm assuming you've also searched Archive.org, Google Books and Hathitrust for her?

#

And she was a store clerk - do you know her place of employment? That wasn't neccessarily an unstable job.

#

I would specifically search the FS and Ancestry marriage dbs I sent, even if you've done a general search on those websites, and even though she may not have married. The search on a860 is so bad they even tell you not to use it.

#

Otherwise I'll mull on it. Bedtime here though!

Thank you!
