They each have four chances to get 10 yards (the yellow line) or score points. If they make it to the yellow line they get to start over with four more tries.

Here’s how it usually goes
They go far enough to get to the end of the field for 6 points, and then they get to kick it through the field goal for one extra point.

They get to their 4th try and aren’t close enough to get to the end zone, but they are close enough to kick for points. They can try to kick it through the field goal for 3.

They don’t make enough progress and they kick it back to the other end of the field so the opposite team doesn’t have it close to their end zone.
