Yeah no you don't need pretendo to play pokemon sun/moon and neither goes for most (if not all) ds games.
Pretendo is basically just for all of the online parts of games, like for example: trading pokemon, playing mario kart with others, adding ppl etc.
Only thing you might not be able to do in pokemon sun/moon without pretendo is complete the pokedex (not fully sure tho. there may be some lengthy workarounds, it just from what i know the issue involves getting the two starters you didn't select and the exclusive pokemon from the opposite game)
