Do people really notice the difference between a top IPS and TN screen that much? Like has it impacted your visual quality of the console by a noticeable/moderate amount?

Because i was going to buy a new 3ds xl SNES edition, but since its boxed I cant confirm its a top IPS or not. Would most people be affected by the type of screen, or opt out for a special edition regardless of the type of top it has?

About TN vs IPS panels

In short, the differences are not significant. While the IPS vs TN differences are significant on something like a PC monitor, the differences on a 3DS system are negligible when viewed directly.

IPS Screens

  • Larger viewing angle.
  • More vivid colors.
    - People often complain of a scanline effect when comparing closely with a TN screen.
    - Suffers from 'crushed blacks', which means that detail in dark areas is often lost.
    - Uses slightly more power, decreasing battery life.

TN Screens

  • Less ghosting.
  • Detail isn't lost in dark areas.
    - Reduced viewing angle/wash out at extreme angles.
    - Colors are slightly duller.

To tell which panels your console has, look at your 3DS from the side or bottom. If the color fades/the screen goes white, it's TN. If it doesn't, it's IPS. If your 3ds has CFW, you can check in the Rosalina menu or with 3DSident by selecting "System Info".
