If I put my sd card from my original 3ds and put it in a new one will the data be saved?

All data on your SD Card (except pictures and videos) is encrypted and has an encryption key unique to each 3DS. This means you cannot use the same card on multiple systems.

Think of it like this: Your 3ds folder has a lock on it and only your original 3ds has the key. If you want to give your new 3ds the key to the 3ds folder you have to perform a system transfer.
