#(NOT MODDED) Bricked Console, safe mode won't work.

What happens, in a nutshell, is that whenever the console boots up, it doesn't make a sound, but the little lights that show it's turned on light up. If I boot it up without the SD card, nothing changes except it actually makes some noise.

Using the good ol' L+R+A+Up on the D-Pad while turning on to boot up safe mode makes the console turn on properly. HOWEVER, it still doesn't change when I try to update the console. It says the system is up to date and turns off. Booting the 3DS back up still has the same results of a black screen with no sound. I've tried this over and over again, with different SD cards and nothing seems to fix it. Is my 3DS done for?

modded?

brazen cliff

nope

(NOT MODDED) Bricked Console, safe mode won't work.

mellow mauve
#

theres not many trouble shooting methods for unmodded consoles

brazen cliff
#

oh crap

brazen cliff
#

is there any way I could factory reset the device, if that would even work?

mellow mauve
#

likely not

#

how did you brick it?

brazen cliff
#

no idea

#

I just stopped using it for a while after I got my switch

#

Must've been anywhere from one to three years

#

Actually nvm I used it during 2022 for a short while

#

Been tryna fix this issue since late '23

#

so it's only been unused from 6-12 months before I first noticed the bricking

#

I did use a flash card once

shrewd compass
#

when you power it on normally and wait about 20 seconds, press the power button, does it bring up the shutdown menu? @brazen cliff

#

if yes, this means the home menu data could probably be corrupt (this happened to my console before)

#

if no, well.... i'm not sure, since safe mode still boots it probably isn't a hardware issue

#

in any case, you may not be able to get out of this without an ntrboot-compatible flashcart

brazen cliff
#

i'll check your suggestion

#

btw what is an ntrboot

shrewd compass
#

ntrboot is an exploit early in the boot process that is loaded from a DS flashcart with it

#

it can be used to recover from any software-related issue regardless of what happened to it

brazen cliff
#

what kinds of flashcarts are compatible with such an exploit?

shrewd compass
#

do you have a flashcart of any kind? it might work

#

only if you have a second working DS, DSi, or 3DS to flash it

#

if you don't, you can buy a pre-flashed card

brazen cliff
#

what does this mean?
I'm illiterate in 3ds modding terminology

brazen cliff
shrewd compass
#

a DS flashcart looks like a DS Game Card but with a microSD slot

brazen cliff
#

I think I still have one

shrewd compass
#

if you can find it, take a picture of it

shrewd compass
brazen cliff
#

nope, all I have is the brick

#

gonna check the cart

#

brb

#

on the cart it says "R4", I'm assuming that's the brand or model

shrewd compass
#

does it have a url?

brazen cliff
#

There's two. One in the front and a sticker on the back

#

The front one is for r4isdhc

#

the back one is for this website called gameflip

shrewd compass
#

what is the full url on the front label?

brazen cliff
shrewd compass
#

does it have a year on it?

brazen cliff
#

yeah, 2020

shrewd compass
#

you have two options; get access to a working DS, DSi, or 3DS and use an ntrboot flasher on that, or buy a pre-flashed ntrboot cart such as Ace3DS X

brazen cliff
#

ah, so there's a specific program I need to boot up

shrewd compass
#

you would be able to start some homebrew software like GodMode9 to figure out what went wrong and fix it

#

or if it is a hardware issue, you can use it to back up important files and bring them to another 3DS

#

https://3ds.hacks.guide/ntrboot lists various compatible carts, if you need to buy a cart, the Ace3DS X is preferred (no need to flash it, it comes with a switch to use ntrboot)

#

at the bottom are different guides depending on the situation (second 3DS, second DS, and second DSi)

brazen cliff
#

Completely forgot you asked me to send a picture of the cart

shrewd compass
#

yes, that should work as an ntrboot cart, but you still need a working console to flash it

brazen cliff
#

I'll see if I have anyone in my social buble with a DS/3DS family system I could borrow

#

is there any chance this cart already came pre-flashed?

shrewd compass
#

if you've used it as a DS flashcart (to play games and stuff on), it is not

brazen cliff
#

oh crud

#

so if I flash this R4, it won't be able to run games anymore?

shrewd compass
#

while it has ntrboot yes, but the original flash can be restored after

brazen cliff
#

I see

shrewd compass
#

the Ace3DS X (and certain other cards) have a switch to choose between "DS" and "3DS (ntrboot)" mode

brazen cliff
#

gotcha

#

you previously mentioned Ace3DS X as an example of a preflashed cart. Does every Ace3DS X come pre-flashed?

shrewd compass
#

yes, that it's main feature

#

it comes with a physical switch to change mode

#

some others come pre-flashed with ntrboot and don't work as a normal flashcart (but can be manually restored)

#

if you are considering buying it you might want to check ebay or other sites, nds-card works fine but it ships slowly from china (expect weeks of waiting)

brazen cliff
#

so 3DS Mode is exclusively an ntrboot thing, while DS mode is the one that actually runs games

shrewd compass
#

correct

brazen cliff
#

well I guess I have settled on my birthday present for this year

shrewd compass
#

in case you don't know where to look to buy it

#

(any ntrboot cart can also be used to set up homebrew and custom firmware on any console, which is useful in protecting against future bricks and making backups of your games and saves)

brazen cliff
#

just purchased the preflashed card

#

it's gonna arrive between june 11th and 18th, I'll make sure to post an update if it fixes the device

brazen cliff
#

It didn't arrive between june 11th and 18th

#

It arrived today

#

And I'm not sure how to make the ntrboot work

shrewd compass
#

@brazen cliff you got the ace3ds x?
