3ds different buttons

I’m trying to buy a secondhand 3ds XL but keep coming across some that have 3 buttons on the bottom and some that only have one, whilst the pictures say XL so I’m not sure why that is and what the difference is

Old has them below the screen, new has them to the right. It's one of the easy ways to differentiate the models

Also the second stick on the right, and the 4 shoulder buttons on new

New has 2x ram and 6x cpu power of old, there are some games that require a new model

What’s better if I look to mod in the future? Not sure if the old would be easier for that stuff

Old doesn't have access to some mod methods

For a while 11.17 was only free to mod on new

There's 6 models. A 2ds, a non xl, and an xl of both old and new

Oh I thought it would be similar to how only old Nintendo switches could be modded
