Does it say it can't read the card when you turn it on with the card inserted?

yep
when I try to update animal crossing so i can play it or access the eshop it tells me it 'can't access SD card'

Good news about the N3DS is the card slot is swappable without soldering, if need be
But before we get to that point, we should see if it's the SD card

I did briefly undo the screws on the SD card port while I was changing the battery thinking I had to do that to take the card out properly (don't ask it was a very stupid moment for me) but I definitely didn't do anything to damage the internal components

sadly I have since moved back to my uni flat and left my screwdrivers at home so can't mess with it again (I can remove the back plate though)

Didn't even have to unscrew it... I pressed pretty hard on the back of the port and it is now working.
