that's cuz macOS catalina doesn't support any 32-bit app :/ your friend can play through the browser, tho! their options are basically: a) downgrade to an older version of mac (such as yosemite, mojave...) or b) download a virtual machine that simulates this older version of mac (this option is kind of heavy, specially if his computer doesn't have much memory)
I faced the same problem, but since I had the standalone version of Transformice downloaded before the new update, somehow I could manage to play from there... but since your friend bought a new computer, I don't think that would be possible
