#screen rattle and shifting

Hey peeps, Ive been working on my first mod/upgrade. I got a GBASP, a Funnyplaying clear shell and Funnyplaying laminated 3.0 screen. I used the FP screws. I didn't install the white foam (which might be my problem). Some other people helped me with the hinges (installing with the screen open and also one was upside down.) I soldered up the OSD and that seems to the be the only thing working properly. I've tried to get the screws in tight (screwing tem in and out until they go deeper) but the shell is still is pretty loose and the screen slides up and down. I'd love some tips.

Please remember to provide as much information as possible including all troubleshooting steps you have already taken. If this is a hardware issue, please provide clear in-focus images of the issue, PCB (circuit board), installation, and any soldering you have done. Help us help you, posts with insufficient information will be deleted

The foam helps a lot. IIRC there are little protrusions around the inside of the bezel to keep the screen in position, but without the foam, there's nothing supporting it from behind, so it can move away from the guides and end up sliding around

#

You can see them here along the edge as little tabs right at the corner of the screen. They don’t extend back very far, so without something behind it, the screen can fall down (in this orientation) and be behind the tabs

Thanks. Yep the foam fixed the problem. Shame it's needed because the clear shell looked better without it.

I'm gonna get a retrosix shell next

Almost anyone in this server will tell you to steer clear of R6

Just FYI

@last aspen there are three recommend sellers. One sells funnyplaying, which I don't think I'm a fan of (the screws barely go in and the 3.0 IPS has a blue ish tinge), one says "be back soon" and one just sells display cases.
I bought fp kit from retrogamingparts.co.uk because I didn't know about this discord.
My point is, who can I buy from who isn't selling FP because so far, I'm not impressed with them eithe?

Retrosix have given me excellent customer service. I can't fault them for their after sales support and tutorials on the items I have bought so far.

If you’re not happy with FP, eXtremeRate also makes SP shells, which folks seem to like. I haven’t tried them myself. They’re available on Amazon in the US, so maybe Amazon UK stocks then as well. I don’t know if they make transparent ones.

If you eliminate FP and XR, your options start to get much worse. The other manufacturer of good aftermarket shells, Cloud Game Store, doesn’t make SP shells, as far as I know. There are some generic, unnamed, transparent ones that some retailers carry which are okay but not great.

It’s of course your choice whether you give business to R6 or not. It’s great that you didn’t have a bad CS experience with them, but sadly a lot of other folks haven’t been so lucky. The tolerances and overall quality of R6 products are typically worse than that of the recommended manufactures, as well, and some of their products, like the CleanJuice line, are flat-out dangerous. At the end of the day, though, it’s your decision

FWIW I have been very happy with the FP shells. If the issue is just that you don’t like the way the foam looks, I understand, but that’s not actually a problem with the shell. The issue is that modern IPS panels are much thinner than the original screen assemblies, so some kind of rear support is necessary. This is the case with virtually all SP shells since they’re designed to be able to accommodate original screens as well

RetroModding in Canada and FP—through their official website and some resellers—make little 3D printed inserts you can place over the foam, which can improve the aesthetics some if you’re into that. RetroModding also publishes the STL files for theirs in case you have the means to print it yourself.

Yet another option is just a piece of card. There are sellers on Etsy who sell custom inserts printed on card stock, or you can design your own

A bluish tint to the IPS sounds like either a problem with the kit or a poorly seated ribbon cable. It could also just be that you accidentally activated the color adjustment mode in the OSD. That SP that I used for the photo I sent above has the 3.0 IPS in it, and while I personally don’t think the 3.0 IPS is as good as their old 9380-based kits, the difference is negligible, and mine does not have a blue tint

It never occurred to me that shells were designed to fit original screens. Also since last posting, I've moved the screen's circuit board outside the foam, with a bit of fiddling, and the shell looks great again. With all the extra fiddling, the threads have finally relaxed enough to let me screw down the parts properly. So based on what you've said about other parts, I could learn to love the FP shells.

The left is a no name mod that was already installed. The right is a brand new FP 3.0

😱 About the clean juice line!! I'm very happy with the dehum/dehiss and power amp mods in my GBA though.

Dehum/dehiss mods don't actually do anything

#

they are a scam product

#

Also, i recommend avoiding anything Retrosix

#

they are massive scumbags, and they lie about the specs on their products

I listened to my GBA through my headphones before and after the mod and the hiss was substantially reduced. The hum was partially reduced. The mod 100% works.

#

And the after sales service was fast

I can't verify or deny your other claims but since your first claim is demonstrably false. Although I appreciate your concern to help people, how can I have confidence in your other claims? And even if they did base their work on someone else's IP originally, perhaps they improved on it

Hi Cube. It occured to me that if those tabs were higher, the screen wuld not be able to slide over them, without the foam bine installed. My RetroSix shell arrived today and it fits the original and FP 3.0 screens without extra foam (the original screen has foam, I didn't remove it), and there's no sliding around. Both the original and R6 shells have raised plastic around the screw holes, which keep the screens in place, without anything extra. The R6 also has better screw covers.

I’m happy as long as you get a working build that you’re happy with. As far as I know R6 does not make an ITA kit, so they don’t have as many possible screens their design needs to support as FP does, but if you’re happy with the result, then that’s all I really care about.

I have been pretty happy with the FP offerings, whereas I think the guy who runs R6 is toxic and a borderline psychopath whom I don’t want to support. Anecdotally, I think the quality of their shells is worse. However, my only intent with mentioning that originally was to make sure you were informed of the experience other folks in this community have had with R6 and their products. As I said above, at the end of the day, it’s your decision if you want to support R6 or not. If you’re happy with the outcome, then more power to you
