#AGB-001 won't boot only GBC games that have a battery after Funnyplaying IPS 3.0 installation?

I recently installed a Funnyplaying IPS screen in an AGB-001. I don't have any GBA cartridges at the moment, just four GBC (Super Mario Land, Pokemon Red, Wario Land, and Donkey Kong).

All four worked fine before I installed the screen. After I installed the screen, only Super Mario Land works. The screen stays blank for the other three and the speaker repeatedly makes a clicking noise.

I realised Super Mario Land is the only one that does not have a battery. What could be making my GBA not work with GBC cartridges with a battery?

If I unplug the screen, I can hear all of the games boot fine (but obviously, the screen remains blank).

I've tried:

  • reseating both ribbon cables several times
  • using high quality Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries,
  • removing all solder that I did for the L/R/Select buttons
  • cleaning inside the power switch with IPA
  • cleaning the cartridge slot with IPA

I'm really stumped. Any ideas of what I can try? I don't have a multimeter, not sure if that's going to make it impossible to properly troubleshoot?

So because this is driving me mad I just tried popping the battery off Pokemon Red and seeing if that worked... still didn't work. Perhaps its not the battery, but because these carts are bigger/look more complicated than Super Mario Land (and therefore possibly draw more power?) I don't know...

Is it possible the ribbon isn't seated properly? I think the connection on the mainboard is in all the way - but make sure you put the locks down (the left side is open), but the ribbon on the display flex board looks… slightly crooked - could you gently remove it, then reinsert and test?

(Otherwise the board looks really clean and nothing jumps out as the problem)

One other question: when you say you get a blank screen, do you get a blank screen on boot, or after you see the Game Boy Advance logo and the introduction/welcome jingle?

I've re-seated that ribbon several times and it hasn't made a difference, I probably just did an average job the last time! I'll make sure it's in fully but I don't think it will do anything,

It's a blank screen on boot. The power LED goes green, but the screen stays black and the speaker repeatedly makes a clicking noise.

If I don't have a cartridge in, I get the Game Boy Advance logo and jingle.

If I have Super Mario Land in, it boots as normal.

I'm going to see if I can get my hands on a GBA cart and see if that works, but I doubt it... It seems like it's not getting enough juice to power anything other than a very old and simple GB cart (Super Mario Land is 1989, no battery, half the size of the other carts inside...)

Trying to eliminate variables here. What happens when you test the carts with the original GBA screen?

They all work fine.

To be clear, I just swapped it back to the original screen and tested and they're all working fine (as they were before I attempted the mod at all).

I also tried using the original back shell in case it was something wrong with the new shell's battery terminal, but had the same problem.

I guess it could only be a power issue with the board (i.e. not delivering enough power to the new screen in certain circumstances) or a faulty screen... I might get a second GBA to try the screen in and see if the same thing happens.

Yep, took off the cover and cleaned inside. Using new Energizer lithium batteries.

Which FP ribbon are you using?

Strangely there was a tiny bug stuck in the power button, thought I'd found the culprit when I saw that... but no difference 🤣
