#Best way to see shorts?

Just installed Froggo's GBC tac mod and after starting up a game I noticed that at least the down button keeps getting pressed. Other buttons are hard to test because it keeps being held down and wanted to know what the best way is to test these controls. Are there any test ROMs that just do the buttons? Already looked around with a multimeter and cannot find anything.

Euh...

do any of those show continuity to ground when you probe?

verbal elk

I'll try in a moment.

# verbal elk Euh...

I haven't used this button tester before. Does this show A, B, up, and left are all being incorrectly shown as pressed?

actually had to test it on my unit to verify but yeah i think that's what it's saying lol

That's an abnormally high number of buttons being "pressed", even for a faulty flex that slipped through. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between each of the test points on the flex PCBs and ground on the GBC

#

You shouldn't have continuity when the buttons aren't pressed

verbal elk
#

Yes, there does seem to be some slight continuity between some pads.

#

A and B don't work, up and left are constantly pressed.

#

Wait, forgot gnd alt.

thorn estuary
#

I just noticed that

#

The flex wouldn't cause them to be pressed at all with GND_ALT not bridged

Decided to redo all the joints and now just up and left seem to short.

thorn estuary
#

Was everything working prior to installing the tac mod?

verbal elk
#

Yup, so it's probably the tac mod acting up. I'll try to see if a little bit of IPA might have gotten under the board.

thorn estuary
#

If that doesn't do anything, and since you'll probably need to take it off anyway, I'd suggest rechecking continuity on the flex once you take it off just to confirm it's that

#

Obviously, be super careful removing the flex if it comes to that so as not to pull off test pads

verbal elk
#

I'll have to raincheck for a bit. My solder sucker is having some issues and doesn't really... Well... Suck anymore.

verbal elk
#

@thorn estuary Removed the flex and it seems like up and left after shorting away from the Game Boy as well.

#

Not sure if this might be user error or not.

thorn estuary
#

Post pics of the board with the flex removed

#

Or wait, did you mean that they're shorting on the flex after it's removed?

verbal elk
#

They are constantly shorted to ground.

thorn estuary
#

On the flex?

verbal elk
#

Yes.

#

Now it isn't doing it anymore.

thorn estuary
#

Hit me up on Etsy

verbal elk
#

@thorn estuary Just realised that my Game Boy is now constantly shorting the D-pad even without the flex. So I probably killed my board.

thorn estuary
#

Post new pictures of both sides. Killing the board shouldn't really be possible in this way

Try cleaning P01 and P02 and inspecting those pads. If any of the solder mask around the test points came off, there's a possibility you've accidentally bridged them to the ground plane

hazy mortar
#

also you have a stray solder bogey

Wick off the excess

verbal elk
#

The excess what? Excess solder?

verbal elk
thorn estuary
#

Yes, excess solder

verbal elk
#

I think those pads are dead.

#

There isn't really anything I can take off of it.

verbal elk
#

Is there anything I can do to remedy this?
