Hello! I was wondering if I replaced the ROM chip in a Japanese copy of Pokémon yellow with a US version, would it work? Basically I have a terrible board with good chips on it and trace repair would take way too long and too much effort. It would be way easier if I could just depopulate the US Pokémon Yellow board and implant the chips on the Japanese copy

JPN yellow has a different MBC memory mapper compared to the US

#

you would ROM swap this with another DMG-A02-01 board

#

but you could probably try to swap it with any MBC5+1024ROM+32RAM

#

Do you have any examples of games that use this board?

#

Or are there any resources where I could find that info

hoary heath
#

Thanks!

You don't think a ROM swap to a MBC3 would be fine?

hoary heath
#

Not that I’m willing to modify that is

#

I’m going to go full in and just trace repair this thing

#

That’s more fun than dropping $20 on different game to destroy anyway

#

Not a profitable repair unless I do the work myself

hoary heath
#

I’ll have to check out a list of games with that mobo and we’ll see

#

Tbh even if I do end up fixing this cart as is, if I were to resell it I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable selling such a dirty corroded cart lol

#

There’s a nonzero chance the corrosion will continue to slowly spread even if I fix ever trace in the board

gaunt dune
#

That cart is long gone because of the corrosion, mainly the fingers that make contact with the console

#

you can't bring those back

hoary heath
#

You can’t bring them back but you can create new ones

#

It’s work not worth doing for most people but for me it’s just a fun silly project

Make sure the board originally had 256k SRAM

#

64k boards are no bueno with a sram swap

faint dust
#

step 1: look for a game with those specs
step 2: confirm with some PCB pics
step 3: try the ROM swap

gaunt dune
#

I don't see why the rom swap wouldn't work on a JP yellow

hoary heath
#

I asked the same thing at the start of the thread but was told it wouldn’t work

#

Yellow is only a 1MB game, MBC3 can access up to 2MB

#

Some yellow JP's were MBC5 anyway

#

I will probably continue with the difficult version of the repair and also buy a game to ROM swap at the same time

#

That way I get to practice on the board before the game arrives

I wasn’t aware this could be done with GBC exclusives

faint dust
#

yes search the resources. youre just looking for a replacement board

gaunt dune
#

Side note, make sure you pull the battery before you hot air the chip off/on

hoary heath
#

I’ve depopulated the whole board already

#

Except for the caps/resistors

#

Battery was the first thing I removed

gaunt dune
#

rom swap is stupid easy, especially on the 32 pin variants

gaunt dune
#

the Nsync one would be the safe bet, especially for $9

hoary heath
#

Yeah I found one for $7

gaunt dune
#

Gen 1 pokemon games varied between MBC3 and MBC5, even ones that didn't need RTC. That's why I figured a yellow swap to a MBC3 would likely be fine

hoary heath
#

I bought it so I’ll post again here in a few days

hoary heath
#

That NSync game worked like a charm.

#

Wow! it's alivee

#

can't believe Nsync's healing jams saved pikachu

hoary heath
#

Lmao

gaunt dune
#

nice, now replace that battery
