After building the handcrank plane, I wanted something that was much more capable of an immediate vertical climb as I wanted a y=600 mountain top base in my survival world.

You steer it by tipping the center of gravity off balance enough that the wings can catch lift. I've calibrated it so that the weight of dirt is perfect for this, as in survival you need to be able to destroy it quickly from a seat (lowered break time, similar to underwater) and for you to not care about losing the blocks to them dropping over the edge. Lighter than dirt and it wouldn't catch enough angle to glide, heavier and it drops like a stone without gliding. It can be calibrated for other weights but dirt is the most convenient.

Also comes with the added bonus that you can see much more if your surroundings than with the handcrank plane, and spend more time gliding slowly before reinput is required, so it's all much more scenic.

4 of them would almost tripple the entire weight of the entire craft, making it too heavy to lift, glide or steer.

things I tried as alternatives:
scaffolding - breaks instantly but needs an opaque base so would require a lot more weight all around to just place blocks
flower pots - fairly light so would work for a very light calibration but clay is fairly expensive in survival. Breaks instantly too but would require 2-3 pots per adjustment and thats a huge waste given you dont pick them up most of the time unlike the dirt for some reason
Wood - good weight and cost effective but too slow to break even with some kind of efficiency diamond axe
