I am incredibly new to this mod...

In order to get used to its mechanics, I decided to build a stupid little airboat and decided to make incremental improvements upon it, trying out different materials for their physical properties utilising what I knew about physics.

Using this, I found my very first stronghold.

The tripwire acts as a dead man's switch.

If I am on the tripwire, it would engage the clutch.

If I happen to fall off the contraption, it would stop the contraption. (There is no seat.)

I mean yeah, there is a remote, but I wanted something cheap, simple & dirty.

Honestly, this is one of the several tests I am conducting while learning about create & its several derrivitive mods all at once.

how do you steer it?

I believe flaps/wings are only to make it less turn random directions

That is correct, the airboat does not have steering just yet.

Without the wings the boat would spin uncontrollably, so the wings are only there for directional stability.

I do need to figure out how to achieve steering.

Oh don't use wings for it, use flaps

I use wings, because they're currently fixed to the body.

You can put flaps down either way

Wings have a permanent tilt to them, meaning I'm pretty sure this would veer off to the side

I did notice they do veer off to some extent
