that is a more usable distance
but so what i mean by the first point is that if you want an item interface to connect to a ship then it may need to be on a create contraption
like a mechanical bearing, a minecart contraption, a train, whatever

hmm
well it could be purely the fact that you arent sending items anywhere
like the one on the bearing doesnt have a chest or anything to grab or push the items

you could try with the mode settings
but i doubt it

ive seen people use bearing contraptions with interfaces as bridges between ships
