So they dropped their deal with OpenAI?
How can Apple just fail at making their own, after years of trying? ๐
They didnt really try, they were gunning for someone else to make the "backend" for it for a while.
They sort of announced it back in 2023/2024, but hadnt really settled on what to use.
People were posting articles like "ooh apple is gaming the companies to make an ai for them like they gamed search engines oooh".
So how did they manage to fail in that endeavour then? ๐
Again, I'm saying they didn't fail. They simply swapped the chosen "backend".
The public perception sure is that they failed with "Apple Intelligence", regardless of what was going on behind the scenes
It just seems unusual for Apple to blunder like that
You can somewhat think of google and open ai and microsoft as "vendors" for ai, ie theyre selling ai for others to use. It's hard to think of it that way because these companies are so massive, but eg the gemiini department is dedicated to just ai over gmail or gsearch and they try to integrate everywhere.
Apple in comparison is not vendoring ai. They are selling you the ios experience. The ios experience is a walled garden at times, but you feel safe and like it's fast and intuitive and just work โข
Apple is using ai as a tool to better siri, not sell its own version of ai. Investing in ai internally doesnt make sense if you dont plan on a new avenue of profit.
Sure, that sounds about right.
But Google & others have "AI" that meets the public's expectations. So why wasn't Apple able to adopt it before pissing off their customers with the "Apple Intelligence" empty promises?
Apple intelligence can work with these models
