`The Surprising Gender Politics of “Simp”
“Stop being a simp!” I was scrolling on Twitter at night, as one does, when I saw this tweet. This unfamiliar adjective stumped me. “What is a simp?” I did what anyone my age does when confronted with slang that they don’t understand — I Googled it. The Cambridge Dictionary told me “simp” had two definitions. One, “someone who tries too hard to do what another person wants, especially in a romantic relationship” and two, “someone who likes and admires someone, especially a famous person, very much.” There was one more subheading the Cambridge Dictionary definition had: Disapproving. Which, in dictionary-speak, means that “simp” is often used in a disapproving manner.
Now, trying too hard to please anyone is certainly not a desirable trait, but is it something that merits disapproval? The thing with any slang is that the subtext is often more important than the word. When we say something is “lit,” we don’t actually mean things are on fire, right? So, I Googled some more. And then I found the reason why I sensed a bit of derision when someone tweeted “Stop being a simp!” While simp is a slang word used to talk about someone who does way too much for someone they like, it’s almost always used for men. Especially men who seem to be treating a woman with respect and affection.
Here are some examples when the word “simp” is used: A guy speaks well of his girlfriend? “Such a simp!” A guy respects when a girl is talking online? “Simp behaviour!” In fact, many commentators have noted the misogynistic way “simp” is used. Maddy Mussen writes in “The Tab” how the word “simp” is the 2021 equivalent of “that’s so gay” when talking about behaviours that don’t adhere to our conventional ideas of toxic masculinity. It’s basically the same misogyny in a new bottle, er, a new slang.`

Of course, the misogyny behind the word goes way back. The word “simp” — originally considered to be a short form of the word “simpleton” — wherein the implication is that this is a “soft” man in fact comes from West Coast rappers in the US using it in the 1980s. The word was even spotted as far back as 1923 in the New York Times. And like all things 2021, the word really came back into prominence on Tik Tok, where the derision in being a “simp” was more pronounced. Soon, it became the go-to for anyone wanting to insult a man who appeared to be too empathetic, respectful or just appreciative of women. Old wine, new bottle.
The thing about words, old and new, is that they have a politics of their own. The reason I have used 400-something words and some hours to dissect the history behind the word “simp” is also to drive home another point. Gender is everywhere. We think it only exists in books, on Twitter, on podcasts, on shows, and in the classroom. But our expectations of who a man should be like, or how much respect a woman deserves, is more deeply embedded we think. If peeling back the layers of history for a slang as innocuous-sounding as “simp” shows that its usage is not without harm, how much more can we uncover in our everyday life?
So, what is a simp? If you believe the dictionary, it’s a person, irrespective of gender, who is trying too hard. But it’s when we ask “what does trying too hard mean?” that gender politics comes tumbling out. The next time I see anyone use the word “simp,” I am just going to assume it’s used for a man who has the good sense to be “soft” -- to be respectful towards the women in life. Seen from that lens, don’t we need more “simps” in the world?
