Well, first of all, I'm Swedish. We start studying it pretty much from first grade in school. We also consume a lot of media in English and we generally don't dub anything besides children's movies. So that's a pretty high baseline. On top of that, I have an unusual amount of exposure to the language even among swedes. I grew up on the internet and everything I was interested in was in English, so it was just English all day every day from the age of about 8. I've been programming since I was about 11, and that's all in English, I studied IT in high school and computer science at uni with most classes given in English. And I've been active in online communities speaking English pretty much constantly my whole life. I dated a Brazilian for 5 years and we spoke exclusively English at home. I've been married to a Paraguayan for 4 years and we also speak mainly English. And, I work for a multinational company with many foreign employees and clients, so we usually speak English as well.

I used duolingo for awhile to practice vocab and basic conjugations ( i also took spanish in high school) but then i found this discord and i just talk in the voice chats or like in the text chats, stuff like that. Radio, tv, read.. the key is staying consistent with exposing yourself. Like dont go hard for a week and then forget about it and return. Should be bits by bits almost everyday @main crag

Manliness is a trait that many men desire. Some even go to ridiculous extents to prove their masculinity to others by purchasing unnecessary superficial items in an attempt to come off as more manly, such as a $100,000 war vehicle. In his article, journalist Dave Berry satirizes masculinity and the humvee, delivering a daytime break to his fellow male Americans. The recent period of time was stressful, with the War on Terror starting on September 11, 2001, and many Americans coped with their precarious condition by turning it into humor. In his article, “Humvee Satisfies Man’s Lust for Winches,” Dave Berry turns troubling events into humor by employing jocular diction, apostrophe of recent controversial figures and issues, and literal emphasis on specific words to create a humorous tone to relieve the country’s tension.

In order to achieve a humorous tone, Berry repeatedly uses jocular diction throughout the text, which serve as a humorous aside. In the beginning of the story, Berry, when describing Arnold Schwarzenegger opening his garage door and accidentally launching a missile, states “Fortunately, it landed in a non-celebrity neighborhood.” If accidentally launching a war weapon was not humorous enough, at the end of the paragraph, the writer uses an aside to further his point. The ironic contrast of releasing a missile, and then describing it landing somewhere as ‘fortunate’ achieves the intended tone because the reader does not expect to read such a positive term. Additionally, the author mentions how the standard American doesn’t matter, and the aforementioned irony pokes fun of this idea. Furthermore, Berry uses words in immature context when he states that a humvee was sitting in his driveway, “covered with puddles of drool deposited by passing guys.” By showing that the humvee had the effect of inducing a response typically associated with little children, the author portrays humor by reducing adults to children. The extravagant display of the effect of masculinity serves a point of laughter before the following, duller, simile. Berry also references ongoing issues and events in order to relieve some of the tension surrounding them.

To relieve the tension in the country regarding controversial issues and figures, Berry references them in lighter contexts by using apostrophe. At the beginning of the account, the author immediately mentions how U.S. troops, driving Humvees, “kicked Iran’s butt and taught Saddam Hussein a lesson… for several weeks.” Saddam Hussein was the leader of a foreign terrorist organization, Al-Qaeda. By making fun of this controversial figure, Berry additionally relieves the country’s stress regarding terrorism. This is accentuated by mocking the failure at the end of the quote. Americans were only able to stop Hussein for a temporary piece of time. By mentioning how Hussein recovered quickly after being hurt, he turns a concerning situation into one of folly. Furthermore, Berry also references the 2000s oil crisis, writing “used more than 300 gallons of fuel. So Saddam, if you're reading this, please send more.” Many Americans were stressed and afraid of the shortage of oil from the Middle East in this time period. By lightheartedly requesting Hussein to deliver more, he turns a troubling situation into one to laugh about. Additionally, by mentioning such a large figure of fuel, Berry also makes fun of the American obsession and necessity for gas. Other than referencing concepts, the author also literally emphasizes certain words.

By putting emphasis on certain keywords, Berry attempts to invoke amusement from the audience by highlighting specific events. The author mentions a hypothetical scenario where in someone’s mind, he expects his wife to be impressed by the ability to inflate or deflate his tires, but in reality, Berry’s wife simply replies with “WHY?” By creating an extreme and emphasized contrast between the expected and real response of the wife, the reader finds the text amusing because it shows the disparity in perception between a woman and her husband's thinking of ‘masculine’ concepts. Additionally, Berry further humorizes the desire to be unique. When in a parking lot, he mentions how “ALL of [the other drivers] would have to stop their vehicles if they wanted to inflate or deflate their tires.” By emphasizing the othering of himself from others, the author makes the reader amused by pointing out the obsession to stand out, as if parking was a competition of masculinity. This very concept satirizes masculinity and causes the reader to laugh.

From referencing controversial figures to emphasizing the competition of masculinity, Berry turns a single vehicle into a well-articulated and informal humor piece. This satirization is not only applicable to traumatic events, but also to anything humans find depressing. With a constant desire to feel better, many people heal their trauma by finding amusement in it.
