estar que + verb is probably my favourite expression/construction in Spanish
Buenas noches a todos
Yo mire el episodio dos de Destinos, y yo creo que aprendo de palabras "otra" y "sobre" ("other" and "about"?)
Es muy bien
I have no idea if those sentances are correct in any way feel free to correct me, folks who actually know Spanish hhhhh
You got this, seconding what @sharp aurora said! :)
Keep on going and wishing you the best!
(I'm glad!) Sí, las palabras son muy útil jajaja!
yeah hhh
I would drop the second yo, because it's clear you're the one expressing their experience/point of view, you already put some emphasis with the first one:
Yo miré el episodio dos de Destinos, y creo que aprendí las palabras "otra" y "sobre"
Está muy bien
"está muy bien" makes sense if you think it's above average. If you think it's good, then use bueno or something else
I think "aprender de" there would mean you found out those words exist, or that you learned details about them, without implying you know how to use them. But I'm not 100% sure
also "X es bien" would always be wrong
don't ask me why though lol
Ahhh, thanks @fallow dock ! Muchas gracias!
Has anyone here used an air fryer? What's the experience been like it? How does the food taste compared to traditional methods?
Preguntas fuertes

disculpa se me olvidó ese mensaje xd
it doesn't but to many Spanish speakers that's what it sounds like lmao
like if you look up el gobierno gobierna that song comes up
xdd I don't hear that but maybe because I'm polish
it took me a solid minute to realize this was tylo jedno głowie mam
koksu piec gram
i think it goes like that
con su pierna
because the beginning sounds like "el gobierno gobierna"

so it became famous amongst spanish speaking groups
especially on tik tok
same as the last attack on titan opening
one part sounds like they're saying "las malvinas son argentinas"
so everyone jokes about it lol

<@&770695364608393256> what are your thoughts on the differences in metaphorical use in English vs. Spanish? i guess what i'm wondering is how would you say Spanish uses metaphors to encapsulate abstract ideas? like "nevermind" and "what's up?" in English vs "what's happening?" in Spanish? does Spanish do this about as often as English does?
Do you see them as metaphors?
ah yes, nothing like gossiping in plain sight for everyone to see 🙃
pensaba que alguien de veras me echaba de menos
also hey vidis i'm back
Sup, Obama.

when we say what's up, it's sort of figurative, in the sense that we're not really talking about a place
Actually, Darknebula, I think those two are very literal expressions. (?)
I don't think they're metaphors
and then "nevermind"
also due to the shared cultural background, spanish metaphors and english metaphors are similar
or idioms/expressions
it's like, trying to get at the idea of time
@stone goblet
hello mr
I think it ultimately boils down to a difference in culture. Different metaphors work for different people
i think the word you're looking for is an "idiom"
Like, "to be up" is just a phrasal verb, I guess.
holy shit my internet just started working again and this chat got flooded
alright
is it happening again?
or did the chat just die
you killed it

rip

i always see that emoji as a tongue licking his head and i cant unsee it
this is a good point
yeah you'd be surprised by how many european languages have so much in common, learn a language from east asia and the differences become so hard to keep track of
trying to learn japanese really humbled me
TIHI
yeah trying to learn to put the direct object before the verb has been really hard for me
but im slowly getting it
welll don't take it too personally, japanese is the hardest language for english speakers to learn
and spanish speakers i imagine as well
japanese has a lot of words that have several different meanings that are hard to explain well in english
ehh that's subjective.
oops
didnt mean to reply to that
i've noticed that for some reason spanish speakers tend to be just as, if not more interested in japanese culture/anime/etc. as americans and english speakers
but stuff like "como te va" can be translated almost directly into english yknow
latin america is full of weebs that's why
/s,
kinda
dont think ive ever hear "como te va" in speech but i havent talked to a lot of latin americans so
well have you ever been asked "how is it going" like similar sort of worldview type shiz
what does qué pasa translate to?
yeah but that translates literally as "hows it going for/to you"
Two separate languages, two separate uses. Take as an example how the meaning of a term may change in spanish according to the region being presented. Now expand that to translating word-for-word to english from spanish and vice-versa, it simply doesn't work, period.
what happened (to you)
what happened
but present tense
is it used like the way english uses what's up?
not past
that's another area where spanish is kind of inconsistent though
that's what i've been assuming but idk
yes
what is happening then literally
cause people use the past tense a lot "que paso" to mean "what's going on"
even stuff that spanish has different (like tu v. usted) used to exist in english
thou vs you
ye
Thou vs Ye. :v
"What happened" more likely, but that's just one example that can be considered way more as a simple coincidence.
thy thine
throwback to when english used runes and not latin letters
Thee, thyself.
we need to go and reclaim our tradition
You mean romani.
i want to see intermediate english learners try to understand shakespeare
i had to read shakespeare in 9th grade and i'm a native english speaker and i was still lost
actually my knowledge of spanish helped me during shakespeare
some older vocab stuff is latin and yknow
like
Didth it?
i didn't know anything about spanish in 9th grade, i'm in 11th grade now
Shakespeare wrote in broken english, do not place him that up on the pedestal.
making kids read untranslated Shakespeare is fucking stupid
the only reason i know what pulmonary system means in english is bc in spanish lungs is pulmones
dideth? i don't think the past tense in elizabethan english follows that conjugation
i think? im not sure. i just know the alphabet was different.
Idk. Lol
also reading shakespeare is fucking hard
our teacher had us actually act it out and it makes much more sense
I should really read Shakespearean English.
in shakespeare english the "-eth" and "-est" conjugations only apply to the present tense
it's not worth your time
but there are a lot of archaic participles
just read an updated one
Really?
yeah if i remember correctly
but re: differences, i think that on the surface you can't translate certain phrases directly, but an underlying sort of worldview and culture/history is pretty similar
i've been reading old english lit a while and shakespeare is still hard for me, i usually have to listen along with an audiobook of it
Depends on the text and the version. Translators and grammar professionals have adapted his work with correct spelling and changes when needed to fit it properly with the pedigree of english present in most books.
oh reminds me
we barely even know how they actually pronounced words back then so even then, audiobooks are kind of not a great idea
No fear shakespeare
yeah i think the word i was looking for was idioms, i'm just now seeing them as more metaphorical in nature
@edgy quarry check it out, has "translated" and original shakespeare https://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/
yeah a lot of the works they make us read in american schools have modern spelling but the grammar and idioms and stuff are preserved

while we're talking about hs reading
i remember seeing a youtube video of someone singing "pumped up kicks" in old english
eg. for hamlet
did anyone else think catcher in the rye sucked ass
oh ayye
"Barely knowing how words were pronounced" is more our fault than theirs, we have a expanded records of Latin books demonstrating pronunciation due to accentuation and spelling
im taking literature next year, so i probably will have to read it though
i thought it sucked ass but my friend gave me an interpolation that he suffered from some sort of abuse or trauma and that's why he can't move on and is an as sole
i liked it as a teen but hate it as an adult lol holden is such a fuckboy
i still dislike it but i like that idea
really? from what i've heard a lot of latin grammar is still missing and debated
Don't read "Catcher in the rye", it was a waste of 2 evenings for me.
it's easy to trace back pronunciation because italians
sure but if the book doesn't give that implication it's doing a shit job
grammar no, pronunciation also changes depending on time frame
that or our teachers are shit
well to be fair the Latin script was kinda made for Latin
i actually enjoyed hamlet
Still missing? Yes. Does that make us unable to speak their language with close pronunciation? No.
idk I thought my teachers were okay
then yeah, i guess it's more our fault that elizabethan pronunciation is inconsistent
Just because my Burger doesn't have lettuce, it doesn't mean that it is less of a burger.
it just annoys me how some people read more into a book that just isn't there and expect people to judge the book based on that
wenz-day
i somewhat agree but that is the basis for literature no?
english spelling reforms are fun to look @
any english spelling reform attempted has a lot of problems with it, at this point our language is irreversibly fucked and foreigners just have to memorize the pronunciation of every new word
no I mean stuff that really isn't there
i think english needs its own entire alphabet to fix a lot of the problems with spelling reforms but americans are stubborn and would never adopt a new alphabet to fix their language
meaning you'd have an english with the new alphabet and an english that uses the latin script
like maybe I'm misremembering but I don't think the book mentioned anything happening to Holden that wasn't straight up his fault
things fall apart
*gestures in metric8
no one would do that, not just Americans
actually the US is technically on the metric system, except in cases where they say it's too much work
It comes from a calque of the latin "DIES MERCVRII" that means "Day of Mercury" (messenger god)
No necesitamos otro alfabeto
that i actually do know
yeah the only reason we havent shifted to the metric system yet is because our culture is entirely based on refusing to change lol, metric system is only used in science classes here and with soda for some reason
days of week are named after 7 brightest objects
Yyeah
and engineering but culturally it won't go away
what it abt?
easier said than done though
english needs a spelling reform
you asked what our favorite books were in english class
Y quizá algunas vocales con diacríticas
i propose, obama's emoji reform
Ö
I disagree that English needs a complete reform but I do think some words need to be deleted
un otro alfabeto es el unico metodo para corregir los problemas con la ortografia de ingles, porque muchas reformas han sido intentado pero todas tienen sus propios asuntos
Ü
i hope my grammar is right
debt should not have a b
I heard people saying that Wednesday is called that because of "Woden's dei" and "Wōdnesdæg" or "Day of Odin" from when it was supposed the whole norse whorshippers would turn their attention to the All-Father.
i do my best to pronounce the b and the t at the same time but sadly thats just not how english works
🌎🗣💬📚
there's also "knob" and "gnome"
why would a new alphabet do what the Latin alphabet can't
yea but i wanted to hear what it's about and your thoughts
don't that's not how it works lol
Then it simply depends on the accent you're pulling too
becuz wen yu chrai tu rait einglish laik dhis it luks reeli stoopid and uhnoiyeeng
oh fuck yea
you can't have an english spelling reform
think about how many dialects of english exist
that too
I don't think "cause it's ugly tho" is a valid reason for an entirely new script
it is
i fucking hate how this makes perfect sense
well done voxel
oh- its interesting for me because we rarely ever read books from a non-eurocentric lens, especially not an african lens. it's a hit-home novel for me
also it really doesn't have to be that ugly
an effective orthography for a language is one that is both visually pleasing and intuitive/easy to learn
kindred too
english's current system only does one of those things
ohh that reminds me of a toni morison book we read
but all spelling reforms for english do the opposite
min löks betr
they make it easy to understand but make it look awful
ugliness is subjective
not really
and frankly you're not gonna get much support for a radical change
i'm saying we speak in emoji
german system incoming
everyone on the esperanto train
in english-speaking culture the way that spelling reforms tend to be written are universally seen as childish because its literally how children write when they dont know how to spell a word
Esperanto is fucking garbage
its not really subjective unfortunately
true lol
that's not what subjective means
i was disputing the notion that it is subjective
why don't we just bring back the latin language
and furthermore, I said it doesn't have to be ugly
I think wie cän rieform it iezily
(spanish natives must be learning a lot of new vocab from the way i type)
It's hard to bring back an Empire.
let latin stay dead
for the love of cosmic energy, no
Enkoni I didn't know you're on our server
if we dream
i will fight somebody before i learn latin
square up
the only valid reason to learn latin is to summon demons
I wonder how a reform would handle night and knight
actually i tried to make a reform once based on the german/dutch system
they'd be homonyms
Jokes on you I'm all for bringing latin back, that's why I'm having a academic minor in it
words can be gay?
i tried to reform it
I guess writing them the same, but I can see arguments for not writing them the same
like "right" and "right"
yes, words can be gay
damn
have we met? o.o
personally my words have no pronouns i don't want to eXIST
I can't imagine hearing someone saying "Slay queeeeeeen" without thinking of the pride flag
that's kainda gæy
okay but can we all agree that european languages having gendered pronouns in the first place is kind of dumb?
queen elizabeth gay confirmed? 😳
She doesn't have time for that.
I don't think it's dumb
finnish has no he/she/it and it functions fine
chinese is actually the best in terms of grammar
it's just part of language
0 gender, 0 single plural, 0 conjugation 0 tense
finnish has 15 grammatical cases
chinese's grammar is mostly analytical which is why it's actually not that bad to learn
lots of african languages too @sly anchor
15?!?!?
how the hell
none of these things even exist in analytical languages
Chinese has number in pronouns
I just call everyone "feller" and "partner" to the point of always walking the grey line like a cowboy god
that's not necessarily true
you can have separate words marking those categories
ye
like reduplication can still be analytic
finnish handles grammatical case differently from indo-european languages that still use them, so saying "finnish has 15 cases" is kind of misleading
Finnish really does have 15 cases though
southern mode activated
I'm Loxisito
OH
yes call everyone by my last name
imagine speaking english with gendered words but it's all "I male sit past tense down on the female locative chair female locative"
hiiii
the red panda
let the german flow through you
im so sorry lmao
that's how analytical languages basically are
no. 💜
well the words would likely be shorter of course
but yeah
actually it'd be dative i think because old english had no locative case
im an e-organism
ew you're alive? lol that sucks
Old English basically had the German case system iirc
german cases + instrumental
damn english has an OST
it had instrumental?
so 5 cases
jkjk
yeah it had instrumental
im barely alive dealing with digital logic heh
cs uwu
im blessed i don't have 2 take digital logic
cs/ling master race
CS/literature master race

@silver crypt no pensaste en hacer podcasts?
im going to start popping in and out because i need to do stuff but ill try to stay part of the discussion
lmao same it was fun but i am procrastinating
Cada vez que me despierto veo tu grabación en #📝・correct-me-please
I was interested in nlp until I saw how much the models look like scary math
can i be ur friend and steal ur knowledge 👉🏽👈🏽😭
now I'm more uncertain
whats nlp?
^
oh mb
potentially 👀 @gusty ermine
I mean I guess I could still work with it but I sure as fuck don't wanna be at the forefront of developing the models
what does that mean tho
like
computer trying to figure out what words mean
easiest example i can think of is like
machine learning translation
how does context change what a sentence means
how to teach a computer, human language
but i'm not an expert so i may be wrong
google translate
enkoni and soup know more
i wanna take the elective for it, im currently in the realm of general algorithm knowledge and programming concepts
I know only slightly more
but since im in digital logic now, i see why itd be scary to translate human concepts into 0s and 1s
but yeah it definitely has applications for translation
sshh i just don't wanna smth that's wrong
im considering getting into linguistics and computer science but i dont know shit about fuck with computers
honestly I just started cs in college and am doing well enough
its computer theory
i'm great with computers but struggling with fuckin programming like bruh
I see a job in IT in your future
i might take AP computer science my senior year
i can reset my router i don't know why programs are the way they are
its more knowing what computers can do rather than knowing about the computer itself
tbh tbh
lots and lots of math
honestly the theory is helpful if you wanna be anything more than a code monkey
if you're gonna be a CS major it won't really reduce credit stuff
lingusitics and compsci seems like a good major because translation/interpretation definitely seems like a job that could start going under as translation technology gets more advanced and useful
and if you really wanna learn, you could get a meh teacher with a meh circuluum who kills your interest
but i wanna return to monke tho
by the time i'm on the career path my work will likely not be nearly as valuable as it would be today
gotta love technology stealing jobs
ai be like
brb building a wall for fuckin technology
honestly I respect anyone who willingly returns to monke
yeah cause like
we gotta deport all the illegal computers
why are linear equations actually scary
(sorry if this chat is offensive to any hispanic immigrants here)
I'm not going to grad school, I'm content with my mediocrity
its no longer y = mx + b 😭
What
WHAT
ITS NOT Y = MX + B?
theres more to lines than just y=mx+b?
crying right now hold on
same
if you dare to, look up linear algebra
lol
I halfassed linear algebra and remember absolutely nothing from it
it seems like as you go deeper into math everything you knew before just turns into more and more lies
same with multivariable
@gusty ermine y = mx + b is the barest minimum of a linear function
lol
taking college math classes in my senior year of hs was the best choice I ever made
i just am the bare minimum
one day i'll be enough
we're bare period
cause 1) it padded my college apps and 2) it opened my eyes to how much a math major would suck
LMAO SOUP
^^^
like when i was taught the parabola equation is just y=ax²+bx+c but now suddenly it's (y-k)² = 4p(x-h)²
you're a CS major enkoni
my friend's a math major but the running joke in our group is that he's a robot so
you take like 99% of the CS classes for under division
and suddenly parabolas have a focus now
correction
hell at least i dont have to worry about calc III
we 🥴
CS math doesn't compare to Math™️ math
meanwhile I probably have like a 60% in my algs class rn
oh man
i have a 25% in data structures
oh no
pog
WHAT
meme curve af
your class' curve is fucking steroids
it also happens to be a giant pain in the ass
lmfaoooo
fuck i would take anal for a class curve like that
like a b-
i heard algo is deadly
it is
harder than anyone other cs class I've taken no contest
i mean i didn't do all of the assignments so far
made my theory of computation class look like fucking preschool
all i know is it's heavy on induction and summations
but thankfully there's partial credit on these monstrous problems and of course, the curve is fat
i wish i could pull the "cs incel meme programmer major" stereotype and become smart but i don't know shit
the strongest curve i had was 60% = C for ap bio but yuh
hard STEM classes aren't a joke
lol
yea i need like
an intense hatred of anything not related to CS
what is spanish? is that some new python library?
import spanish
print(hola)
it was only half a class but I'm still traumatized
I literally blew off two of the relevant assignments
oh bruv i can help maybe
after digital logic we do assembly
i actually enjoy assembly so far
i'm like
late on some of my assignments
but yknow
can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs
the eggs being my grades in this metaphor
oh yeah what's been troubling for you with data structs?
||all of it ||
glad I'm never gonna deal with that again
actually i've just been out of it like on a personal level
and CS people 99% are just assholes
sounds like your school sucks lol
^
my school prioritizes teacher-student relationships and stuff
I won't lie and say the cs students are sociable but they're nice enough
yep
damn
well you cant maintain a social life and be a cs major
where r y'all generally from if u don't mind me asking
that's like mixing water and oil
you say on a social interaction in discord
shhh
(the joke is they aren't that asocial I just wouldn't know because I haven't made many college friends)
lmaoo
i actually finally started talking here after a good month-
good month of what
well I've been on this server all day cause I have nothing to do
hibernation from what data structures did to me
I have a group app project but I can't work on any of the issues for reasons that are finally not my fault
i got an A but, at what cost
i used to go on here a lot then stopped bc of classes but now i'm here bc i love the community
I don't care much about getting an A
I just pad my gpa with my ling classes and pass no pass the ass cs classes, which my college is letting me do more during corona
ooof same
literally exactly the same
except language classss and other humanties that i enjoy instead of ling
im actually thinking of maybe continuing spanish classes if i cant take anything else
i AP'd out of the language requirement
lol I wish I could've done that
spain without the s. remember that
(joke is I could've but I didn't wanna do AP spanish)
^^^
if it makes you feel any better
the classmate i mentioned earlier tried doing data structures and linear algebra at the same time

honestly data structures was kinda easy
and now theyre doing algo and digital logic simultaneously
but my prof was the goat
^ive been blessed so far with good profs
besides my prof for programming concepts
I've only had one or two cs profs that I wouldn't take again
one of which I currently have
he was.. something
my cs profs have all been trash
who to me seems like a smart industry guy who's too disconnected from how college students are doing and isn't the best at teaching
^ thats almost always the case
to his credit though, he did extend a couple deadlines after hearing how many people were dealing with midterms
he's honestly not the worst but I still don't like him
theyre there for research or a phd and couldnt teach if teaching infected them
well teaching is more of a side gig for him iirc
I could be wrong, I don't actually know for sure
my cs classes don't even have any zoom meetings or lectures so it's just self learning tbh
i can do that w my fridge hmph
but ye
if y'all don't mind
where y'all from like in general
is it bad that my first thought was damn you live in the atlantic ocean?
Who said cs majors can't have a social life lol
the major itself
yuh

i'm califnroa

damn across the country
we're planning to meet later this year tho hopefully ^-^
Suerte
Lol
solo es broma, flor de corazon (:
Anyway si tienen preguntas de CS, estoy acá para ayudar
so why do we exist
Porque nuestros padres hicieron cositas

<@&583624560432119820> My family and I are planning to do a 2 weeks trip in the North-East in November in 2 years. It isn't included on the map, but we'd be passing through Burlington, Concord, Manchester, Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport as well. Does this seems like a relatively good route? If not, what would you suggest I modify? Thank you!
