Thanks Honey, it's a beautiful melody
@uncut lark hey I know you already answered this on vc but I wanted to ask you what you did to get your Spanish to the level it is right now. Did you focus on other languages while doing it?
also was it harder than you thought it would be and how much?
Are you learning Japanese and Spanish as well?
Wait, Mopas, are you learning Japanese too? :O
vidis, did you learn any kanji yet?
Nope.
who? me?
I learnt hiragana and katakana in January.
And... here I am, nothing more.
I'm a piece of shit.
wouldn't it be hilarious if you learnt hiragana and kanji but were too lazy for katakana
I still have to join the Japanese-English server. awa
I left there recently lmao
I haven't forgotten your kind invitation.
lol these are sad times
yeah because it was messing with my mental health (you know, comparing yourself too much and stuff)
Oh, I see...
you know that point in your language learning process where you're almost fluent but not quite?

yeah it's the worst
it does get overwhelming seeing everyone's japanese better than yours
That's me with English. :D
Fake sunrise smile intensifies
I'm not afraid of my speaking, but when it comes to phrasal verbs... God, I really have to work on those.

I just absorbed it like babies do, and a few useful books here and there for false cognates and such
Also, I'm "learning" French and Chinese
woah cool
I cross my fingers, Hagane
LMAO
pero pasa
do you think I could make progress like that in Portuguese?
no its not that duro, the main thing is false cognates
thank you loziii 😭
yeah you could, just try and focus more on the pronunciation as its harder than vice versa
Portuguese? Ez af, no worries.
i'll tell you something tho
You know a language called Spanish?
my friend from my old apartment complex spoke with a super thick cordobes accent portuñol thing
Same, but simpler.
and everyone liked it
so dont stress
we'll known you're argentinian but brazillians love foreign accents
ahaha
do you like my new nickname?
it got better lmao she now has much better portuguese
so it'd be better if I kept my porteña accent?
nah, both ways work
yee it's pretty
but a mildly thick accent sounds very interesting
and since its spanish
we'll understand it
like u
one person I really like misspelled my nickname and I found it adorable funny
I see. So if I mess up my nasal vowels nobody will throw rocks at me, got it
Trust me, Hagane.
i can assure you portuñol sounds better when spoken by a spanish speaker than the reverse

You'd better preserve your accent than speak with a Brazilian one.

Sim.
Duolingo has a very "neutral" accent so if you copy the woman its fine too
I copied that damn woman and ended up here.

cause like I love how Portuguese sounds and want to go from understanding 50% on a good day to understanding as close to 100% as possible lol. But on the other hand I am interested in Korean and idk if studying both would be compatible

usually it's better to learn 2 very diffrrent languages at once than 2 similar ones @haughty sierra
i.e korean and portuguese vs korean and japanese
at least we just made fun of her in a light way
xD
nobody thougut it was ugly
or anything
brazillians either think of argentina as a latin american france
or venezuela 2.0
theres no inbetween
LMAO
its still in our head the image of 2010s wealthy posh argentina lol
so the accent sounds nice
brazillians in general dont have problems with foreigners or their accent
we won't switch to spanish bcos our spanish would be equally terrible
the only exception I can think of is gringos with super thick accents and a Brazillian whos fluent in english
that way we will indeed switch to English
I can imagine a Brazillian saying "gusto de vos" and thinking what they said was totally not romantic lol
we dont know y'all use vos
lmao
its just that vos sounds really similar to você with vowel reduction
I see. I think this is common in all of latam (that gringos with a thick accent will be adressed in English)
also if you have a very good accent but still use bo, che, mina, gurí and drink mate
we'll think you're gaúcha
and thats worse than argentinian

"Você" is actually "usted". :v
yep
Lol
But it goes with third person if you're not in the south, right?
for formal stuff its o senhor/a senhora/madame
yep
its third person
but so is tú here
lmao
Oh, you're from the south, right?
southeast.
Makes sense.
do not call me a southener.

for pronouns its essentially the same as colombian, theres no formality distinction
Sur-anos.

tu, você and cê are interchangeable @haughty sierra
only one way though
do not call a doctor tu
well you can
but it sounds re informal
so if I call everyone voce I'm safe? or does it not work like that
we are the same as uruguayans as in we wont call a doctor or (SOME FAMILIES) our parents usted lel
o senhor/a is mostly for ppl in positions of authority like the president or your boss
but u can call ur boss você or tu depending on the boss
Chad Northern (European) Portuguese using "tú" and "vós".

(has nothing to do with Rioplatense vos)
Well. yes.
But it's used as "vosotros". ewe
yep
So... European Portuguese keeps þe olde distinction in the north. :'3
Except this is dead everywhere else including in standard European Portuguese
we buried vosotros
Btw.
this is gud map
Did you have "nosotros" and "nós" at the same time to distinguish between inclussive and exclussive first person? awa
Marruecos?
Western Sahara.
Eugh, mixing "vos" and "você".

el sahara español ya no está

Spanish is only spoken here at the border
mostly the Uruguayan border
iirc its the only fully open one
the paraguayan one is open but i think major roads have crossings with customs
also Napoléon said they speak more portuguese than Spanish in ciudad del este y iguazu lol
yep
the border tends to be bilingual both sides
as both r taught
i wonder if the slang is similar because of both countries having gli italiani or because the 3 are part of mercosur @haughty sierra @gusty ermine
because zafar, mina, etc are mostly italian
lunfardo seh
and all 3 have italians
morfar
and ofc theres the guarani words all 4 mercosur countries use
but the italian ones r interesting
like did we borrow it from italy or argentina
maybe a bit of both?
mhm true
we influenced each other + got influenced by italy
yes

especially because these words all come from rio and sao paulo
u arent gonna hear someone in the amazon saying mina
for example Idk if other dialects allow for this but in Argentina "gustar de alguien" exists (although the meaning is kinda different)
I think that might have been direct influence
from portuguese into rioplatense
It exists in formal Spanish.
oh yeah right lol
though in arg it's a pretty common expression
De él*. ewe
Wait.
yeah but gusto de el implies romantic interest
I just remembered.
oh I thought it didn't
We do have a similar construction here for romantic liking using "gustar".
Me gusto
I didn't know that

That's how we said it when I was a kiddo, at least.

dropping the Eu is possible but not common
Eu gosto de shocolachi.
is dropping the subject as common in Portuguese as it is in Spanish?
True.
I see
repeating subjects in writing is seen as bad writing
eu me llamo hagane. eu nao falo portugues. eu gosto de chocolate
even in situations when spanish would definately drop it we wouldnt
me chamo*
suena como me llamo en rioplatense
pero es chamo
thnx!
Wait.

No

So it's Galician that has more fixed positions for clitics...
yep
but yeah this kinda writing is seen as 5yo text to speech
"Eu me chamo Hagane, (eu) não falo português e gosto de chocolate"
would be how I write
Chamo-me does NOT exist in spoken Brazillian @edgy quarry
it sounds weird af
both mean the same thing but my name is is more common

I'm writing all this down lol
Do you know if it would work in European Portuguese?
Sublime.
for all verbs using enclisis
sounds more euro
brazillians tend to emply proclisis way more
"me disse" "se foi" "se chama"

any doubts just ask
I don't know much about Euro as i talk to like
2 portuguese people
F.
other slang we share with non-rioplatense: agorinha (ahorita), bacana (bacán), parça (parce), pentelho (pendejo)
thank uu
does pentelho mean the same as pendejo in mexico or in rioplatense?
explain.
what does it mean in Rioplatense

i'm assuming pubic hair? lol
if so, both
It means 'kiddo' in Rioplatense, iirc.
Superb.
this
yeah same here
"cuando era pendeja" is a common expression
an annoying kid
or just kiddo
its somewhere inbetween kiddo and the mexican use
since its mostly annoying kids lol
estos pendejos que no se callan
but yeah its can be used as kiddo
lol
yep
//nsfw ||mamar and chupar mean the same thing but a chupapija is a boqueteiro/a, and a blowjob is a boquete, pija is pica ||
very important
Maybe "burato"?
Just for "hole", I mean.
Both are valid in Galician.
Furado, furaco, burato, buraco. :v
Yeah, that as well.
Lol
lol
Do you use -ico as -inho in Brazilian Portuguese?
we use it as a cuter informal diminutive
Same here. awa
pititico = very informal word for tiny
-ito isn't that common.
-eco is pejorative
We don't have that one. uwu
livreco = crappy book
traveco = tr*nny
i have no idea if its formal or not
but we use it like that
@haughty sierra travesti existe en Argentina no?
sii
here it's not a slur but it's also not a very nice word. It basically means transvestite
^^
nah its just a word here
We've got an ever worse one which is "travelo". :v
some ppl use it offensivelt but the same way theyd use gay
yeah travelo here is traveco
oh that one we don't use

traveco is offensive af
#BrazilGang.
not a slur but trans ppl do not like it
in Argentina we have trava which is probably considered as bad as tr*nny
or trabuco
trava here is a variation of traveco
El trabuco de Pernambuco.

loool
Meaning "el pene".
esto me hace acordar demasiado al bananero

Innit.
we dont rly have a word for fag?
at least i think
viado is close enough but especially here where i live really not the same at all
theres like a shitton of words but none are extremely offensive
Oh, right, "venado".
the desviado term was popularized in the dictatorship (they didn't prosecute gays but they kinda did)
no puto in brazil?
but it comes from the animal

puto is like uh
its just

a word
its like "son a bitch" but non offensive
u can use puto casually
wow
like boludo
that's interesting
good thing I learnt that before listening to someone say it
I see
as for gays it depends
some reclaim the term some dont
and here in Rio it means "buddy" between friends
no matter if theyre gay or not lol
it does NOT mean that in other states tho

theyll not get offended but they dont go around using viado

Rio is like the Buenos Aires of Brazil includind accent
a small city with a hugely distinct and influential accent
small = 6 million

but small nonetheless at least in size
same with puto here
lmfao
i am so glad i know its fag now lmao
i had no idea in arg it meant that
*me, arriving in recoleta
pero que puto sos

but that does make sense
honestly it isn't uncommon to hear that but yeah if you're lgbt you probably don't like hearing it
I always thought it was curious that the exact same insult in different genders means completely different things
you can if you call yourself or your gay friends puto lol
"soy re puto" for example
lmao
same here
viado is usually used by more effeminate gays
but not always
the manly men. also use it.
here Ig it depends. Puto is not that commonly used among gay people, I think we use terms like "diva" and "divina" more
sos una diva
diva here is for over the top gays
divina is just divine
"tu tá divina" is just u look very good lol
does it not have the nuance that it's a very feminine word?
gays use shit in feminine ALL the time
not just divina
we
say "amiga" "a gay" "ela"
lol
hahaha same
some straight women and men also use the feminine a lot
im waiting till its the only gender
if u are in a queer crowd u CANNOT tell the gender just by the -a lmao because everyone will use it
that's interesting. It's pretty much the same here (it depends on the person though)
yeah
some gays dOnt lIke IT
but most dont care
my straight friends also dont get offended by it
like for example if someone is calling you over the top/dramatic they could say "ay la dramatica"
yeah
or "ay ella"
YES, YES, YES.
the terfs seeing cis men using the feminine:

tErF iS a SlUr
once a terf said woman isnt a feeling or a name on twitter so the whole thread kept calling her by masc and she said I HaVE a FEmINIne NamE

lmfao self aware wolves material right there
"we should abolish gender!!!"
*using pronouns and terms interchangeably and moving toawards gender neutral names and language
No NoT lIKe THAt
Yes, abolish gender
that sums it up
same shit here
ah claro = ah ta
asi esta bien = ta ta
oh @river ivy y'all say pera for espera like brazil too?

why do u even associate it with brazil? spanish skips letters a lot, u know
^^
im watching an uruguayan youtuber so idk if its used outside uruguay
but pera is common af here
not everything in the world is related to your country
i dont think any other spanish speaking country uses this
and your use is identical to the brazillian use of ta
Not in that way, of course.
yeah
But we do shorten the verb with its normal usage. :v
i mean the ta expression not ta as in está
ta as in ah ta
ta
ta ta
taa
puede significar muchas cosas al menos aquí
well
yes
but no one else uses it so thats interesting
i promise we dont want to retake uruguay im just curious
how is it interesting? all countries have things that aren't said somewhere else
because it is interesting
especially how the use is identical
not saying uruguayans copied us or vice versa just that its an interesting quirk
you're just obsessed with relating us with your country
perhaps
do argentinians also do that
Oh, wait, I had forgotten Tami is Uruguayan. Lol
...
i went to the comment section of the video and someonr was saying how they hate argentinians for pretending uruguay is a province
URUGUAYAN.

...
vidis you're cancelled

Dude, I'm like at three convos at the same time. :'v
and hm yeah there's a bunch of stupid argentinians who think they're funny making jokes like we're not a real country, and yes, people hate them

luckily most argentinians aren't like that
but it's not weird for people here to dislike argentina because of them
i am sorry. i love ur country
when i say its interesting its the same way how brazilians and argentinians using che and mina is interesting

just an interesting linguistic quirk
actually it's funny bc they usually like us
es cisplatina y no uruguay
i havent seen a single latin american who dislikes uruguay tbh
its usually argentina

thank god cos i always struggled with that P
it sounds so awkward
sEpTIEMBRe
nice i dont need to say it
like is omnibus the "proper" word
and bondi slang
or r both informal
igual decimos bus, aunque no tanto
the pedo phrases r confusing
en pedo ni en pedo al pedo de pedo

en pedo = borracho
al pedo = aburrido
no¿
usamos mucho esas
"estoy al pedo" = estoy aburrido, sin nada que hacer
"hacer X cosa es al pedo" = hacer X cosa no vale la pena, es innecesario
oh ok
sí
bueno, el orto del mundo también, pero no se usa tanto como el culo del mundo
encendedor es yesquero en uruguay aparentemente

encendedor me suena horrible
well its literally lighter but

sounds so literal

ohhh you use pronto as listo
i wonder if argentina uses it too
oh ok
aprontar en portugués is to set something up
but in a bad way
but also that
except in that case its a reflexive
se aprontar/aprontar se
its not a reflexive in spanish is it?
i am learning a lot about uruguayan spanish with the videos
you use dar bola to mean romantic interest?
its used here but its sounds slightly cringy/old to me
oh ok
it's not bad here, it's just like preparar
doesn't have to, but can
it's just for paying attention in general
en plural?
🤔
oh ok
i couldn't understand the exact thing but it seemed to be something like that
oh ok
estar harto, básicamente
we have a similar expression here (my dad loves using it lel) but its ballsack instead of balls
thanks

@stoic hill you said you would want to be a psychologist. So which segment interests you the most? Social, clinical etc.
so in Poland it is not a psychology but psychotherapy (and you cant study it at Uni 😭 xd) . Its systemic psychotherapy.
Ohhh
Systemic psychotherapy... Hmm...
Gracias!
Entonces cómo se califica por eso?
hmm... I am not sure if I understand the question xDD You mean how to became psychotherapist or what? :/
och you were at uni? 😛 So what did you study?

Sí! Un curso equivocado... Commerce!
hmm. it really depends on the country because I think the rules are different everywhere. For example here in Poland to be a psychologist you need to study for 5 years, in the USA only for 3 xD. In Poland to be a psychotherapist you need to go to a 3 year course and learn about different therapies there and you can choose a system specialization later. But as I said the rules are very different in every country
after psychology, especially after social psychology you can of course consult with the family, help them, talk, etc. But it is not a therapy
and + to be a psychotherapist in Poland you have to go to the psychotherapy xd
Ahhh imaginaba que sería así...
Bueno, todavía me hace falta mucha investigación
Pero es un deseo de muy lejos
q bizarro
O sea lejano?
Yo diría una meta a largo plazo

ya no necesitas?
@tender lake "that team is toxic, you know what I mean?" suena mejor

In Colombia you need to go to psychotherapy in order to be a psychologist too.
I have a couple of friends that are psychologist and they told me that without it they can't help people nor do any type of consults

hello! Hola! I'm new here. Main is overwhelmingly busy. Thought I'd say hello here.
basically this is where I am in spanish on duolingo. Halfway through chapter one. I can form small sentances, but yo no sé mucho español. Yo no sé muchas palabras.
I don't know how to say "my memory is crap" in spanish but basically my memory isn't great in general, and I have issues spelling. So it's a slow process. Yo aprendo despacito. (?)
Hi! I'm still learning as well, but I'm not on Duolingo. Do you use any other resources?
I use spanishdict when I have to look up something specific or need extra information on grammar or words (duolingo is really good for gamifying learning, but it does NOT explain itself or give you a litteral translation.)
Other than that not really.
Do you like using Duolingo? I think you're in the right place to practice though (on the server)! (Ofc maybe not now bc I'm writing to you in English lol)
lmao yeah
I like using Duolingo, it teaches in a way I understand better than traditional textbooks and the like.
If I can get my work ethic up to par, hopefully I'll practice a lot on this server and get through some more lessons on Duolingo/elsewhere
What do you use?
... I don't know which form of "what" to translate that last sentance to spanish rip
Que tu usas? maybe?
I tried a beginner course on Edx for a bit (alphabet, pronunciation, basic sentences), but I didn't finish it. I did Language Transfer (Spanish) up to ep30 and I quite liked it. I stopped that bc I felt like I was actually translating things too much, but a lot of people seem to like the method they use
oh nice
I haven't heard of those before, but those seem like good things to use
More like traditional classes I assume?
The online course yes, but Language Transfer is all audio. The host says to not write things down or memorize. Up to you whether you want to or not. But they try and teach you grammar w/o throwing it all at you at once
And it's quite engaging
ah neat
I need to write things down and memorize them. I'm a much more visual learner.
But its also a shortcoming, because for the most part I can't hear or speak spanish, only read and write it.
This is also slightly true of English but.
Hmm so idk if this'll fit your style, but there's a telenovela called Destinos (free online). It eases you into listening to Spanish and basic grammar + vocab
I didn't finish it, but it was kind of helpful
also, #📗・preguntas-lounge is great for questions if you have any! : )
Oh neat! Thanks <3
I'll see if that clicks with me
No problem! You can also check out Youtubers that read short stories with parallel text or the like. I'll post one on #625433491223609344. Best of luck to ya, and you got this!
(I'm also procrastinating p bad rn)
Mood, and thanks!
I have an auditory processing disorder and mild speech impediment so I've been extra procrastinating on learning to actually hear and speak spanish rip. Took me most my life to get my native solo language of english down haha. But I should put effort into that area more alongside learning more words.
Ah I see I see. Well hey, better any time/late than never. If you like Duolingo, defs keep it up! I think I don't focus on vocab or reading enough at times, so I'm the opposite for now haha
There are also memes in #😂・memes that are quite helpful ngl
memes are always helpful lmao
Muchas gracias!
De nada! Sí, es de 1992? Jaja. Pero me gusta la voz de Raquel! Qué linda!
(There's an interactive quiz thingy available as well if you're on the Learner.org website)
oh neat
Que es "la voz" y "linda"?
"la voz" "the voice" o?..
it's okay
i have a small vocabulary thus far, and hey im here to learn
thanks for catching that! and yo same boat haha
I have no idea what voz means though is it voice hhhhhh
:D
thanks
Me gusta la voz de Raquel
Me gusta su voz
Gracias! "Sus" es plural?
and is one better than the other? (la voz vs su voz de Raquel)
Es como decir "Rachel's voice" vs "her voice"
Sí, sus voces
ah, gracias
Ah entiendo, muchas gracias!
De nada

It's time @alpine cradle

Jaja

Hola, soy Robert y bromeo demasiado
Y vengo aqui a practicar mi español y hacer bromas inapropiadas, aparentemente
